Clockwise from top right hand corner, Fairisle, lacy, tiger and ribbon.

Materials -

Fairisle - 1 skein of Rowan handknit dk cotton. Oddments in 3 complimentary colours for fairisle piece. 4mm needles.

Lacy - 1 skein of Rowan Wool Cotton. 4mm needles.

Tiger - 1 skein of Rowan All Seasons Cotton each in orange and black. 4mm needles.

Ribbon - 1 skein of Colinette Wigwam. 5mm needles

Gauge -

Fairisle - 32 rows and 20 stitches over 10cm

Lacy - 28 rows and 24 stitches over 10cm

Tiger - 28 rows and 20 stitches over 10cm

Ribbon - 22 rows and 16 stitches over 10cm

Size - Each hat will approx fit a newborn / 3 month baby

Directions.

Fairisle

Cast on 66 stitches and work in K1P1 moss stitch for 4 rows.

Beginning with a K row, work 2 rows in stocking stitch.

Fairisle row 1 - Alternating main colour and first contrast colour work along the row in the following way : K1 main, K1 contrast. You will end the row with a stitch in contrast colour.

Fairisle row 2 - Using the main colour and your second contrast, work along the row purling each contrast colour stitch from the previous row in main colour and each main colour stitch from the previous row in contrast colour. You will end the row with a stitch in contrast colour.

Fairisle row 3 - Using the main colour and your third contrast, work along the row as described for the previous row.

Continuing in main colour only, work in stocking stitch until hat measures approx 9 cm.

Shape crown

Row 1 - Knit 4, K2 tog. repeat to end.

Row 2 and all wrong side rows - Purl

Row 3 - Knit 3, K2 tog. repeat to end.

Row 5 - Knit 2, K2 tog. repeat to end.

Row 7 - Knit 1, K2 tog. repeat to end.

Row 8 - P2 tog to end.

Break yarn, thread through stitches and seam side

Lacy

Cast on 70 stitches and work 3 rows in garter stitch. For lacy brim, Knit 1, (yarn forward, K2 tog) repeat instructions in brackets until last stitch. Knit 1.

Purl all wrong side rows.

Repeat lacy pattern 3 more times before continuing in stocking stitch until hat measures approx 9cm finish with a wrong side row.

Crown decreases

Row 1 - Knit 5 K2 tog repeat to end.

Purl all wrong side rows.

Row 3 - Knit 4 K2 tog repeat to end.

Row 5 - Knit 3 K2 tog repeat to end.

Row 7 - Knit 1 K2 tog repeat to end.

Row 8 - P2tog to end.

Break yarn, thread through stitches and seam side.

Tiger

Tip : If you carry the yarn up the side of the work when you change colours you will have less ends to weave in on finishing the hat.

Cast on 66 stitches using black and work 6 rows in stocking stitch. Change to orange and work 2 rows in stocking stitch. Change to black and work 4 rows in stocking stitch.

Continue working 2 rows in orange and 4 in black until 4 orange stripes have been worked. Work 3 rows in black before commencing crown shaping.

Crown decreases

Row 1 - black - Knit 4, K2 tog. repeat to end.

Row 2 - orange - Purl

Row 3 - orange - Knit 3, K2 tog. repeat to end.

Row 4 - black - Purl

Row 5 - black - Knit 2, K2 tog. repeat to end.

Row 6 - black- Purl

Row 7 - black - Knit 1, K2 tog. repeat to end.

Row 8 - black - P2 tog to end.

Break yarn, thread through stitches and seam side allowing bottom to roll slightly.

Ears (make 2)

Using black, cast on 6 stitches and work 2 rows in stocking stitch.

Decrease 1 stitch at each end of next 2 rows - 2 stitches.

Change to orange and increase 1 stitch at each end of next 2 rows - 6 stitches. Work 2 rows in stocking stitch. Bind off and seam sides of ears.

Attach ears to top of hat, orange sides facing with approx 1 inch in between the ears.

Ribbon

Cast on 66 stitches and work in stocking stitch for approx 9cm.

Crown decreases

Row 1 - Knit 4, K2 tog. repeat to end.

all wrong side rows - purl

Row 3 - Knit 3, K2 tog. repeat to end.

Row 5 - Knit 2, K2 tog. repeat to end.

Row 7 - Knit 1, K2 tog. repeat to end.

Row 8 - P2 tog to end.

Break yarn, thread through stitches and seam side
