| These
square trousers are so easy to make, all you need is
your choice of fabric, some elastic and thread. They
are simply 2 squares or rectangles of fabric, seamed
together to make a pair of wide leg trousers.
If
you know the recipient of the trousers I would recommend
having a pair of their existing trousers to hand for
reference, this makes it easier to ensure that you are
making the correct size.
The
measurements given below made a pair of wide legged,
cropped trousers for a 4 year old. You can easily alter
the size to fit your child by making them longer / shorter,
wider / narrower. They are so quick and easy to make
you can afford to experiment a little!
Directions.
Cut
2 rectangles of fabric measuring approx 12.5 inches
wide (this will give you a trouser leg which is approx
6 inches wide after seaming) and 20.5 inches long (allowing
for 1/2 inch hem at the bottom and 1 inch for waistband)
Hem
1/2 inch seam along the bottom of each trouser leg.
Fold
each leg piece in half, right sides facing, with the
hemmed seam at the bottom. Join the side seams together
from the bottom for 11 inches. Stop. Repeat with other
leg piece.
Fold
down 1 inch at the top of each leg piece to make a waistband
for the elastic to go through. Sew in place. Repeat
with other leg piece.
If
you lay the pieces next to each other, seams on the
inside, you will have what is beginning to look like
a pair of trousers. Woo Hoo!
Take
hold of the top layer of both trouser legs and again
with right sides facing, seam from just below the waistband
down to where you meet the leg seams. This makes the
seam that goes either in the front or the back of the
trousers. You should have just over 1 inch of unseamed
fabric around the waistband at the top. This is so that
you can thread the elastic through later.
Turn
the trousers over and repeat wth the other side. You
may need to take extra care around the crotch area,
I handstitched the first couple of pairs I made until
I got the knack of the machine.
Thread
the elastic through the waistband at the top and tie
securely when you are sure it is the correct size. Measure
against existing trousers if you are not sure. Turn
the elastic around slightly so that the knot isn't directly
in front of the hole in the waistband and then seam
the 2 holes in the waistband (front and back) sewing
through the elastic. This allows it to hold securely
in place.
Turn
right side out and voila - simple, square trousers in
only a few minutes!
