Foxy lady
I love this pattern for the foxy beret on the Rowan site, I just downloaded it yesterday.

Fortunately enough for me Wayne and Brooke picked me up from work last night and we got on a double decker bus and went into the West End to see the Christmas lights. Walking by Liberty at about 8pm I noticed that they were still open, what's more they were having a specisl 10 % off sale. So I popped in and bought the Kidsilk haze for the foxy beret.
Brooke had a great time, the lights weren't great (not as good as I remember them being when I was little) but we still had fun. She charmed the ladies in the Rowan dept of Liberty and they gave her her own little bag to put her toyin. She was wearing a hat that I had made for her (for a change) and when one of them said "I like your hat" she told them "mummy made it for me" Bless her. She kept looking at all the yarn and saying "its so beautiful. Can I touch it. Can I put my face near it and see if it tickles?" Wayne rolling his eyes while I melted along with everyone else around me!
Here she is with her Liberty bag. She took it to school this morning instead of her tweenies rucksack. Who wants to be like their mum?

Cold, wet Wednesday yarn sale
I think I owe some people an apology for the Terre Neuve scarf statement yesterday, let me clarify. I wouldn't wear it and I think the yarn is more for kids than adults. That said, obviously there are people out there who would wear it so lets agree to disagree. Life's too short...
I'm working my way through the mittens well, thanks for all your tips yesterday. I've made the 3 year old pair and one of the 5 year old ones. Here's a picture of one of the 3 year old ones. I'm using the same colours in a different sequence for the other girls pair. I'll be starting the boys pair tomorrow, need to dig out some stash yarn for it tonight.
Talking of stash yarn I'm having a HUGE clearout. I'll be selling all the yarn below on ebay at the weekend, have a look now and see if there is anything that you're interested in. I haven't photographed it all yet but I will be. Send me an email and I'll give you all the details.
Finally, I decided to offer this Rowan Plaid as a trade instead of selling it. I have 2 skeins in shade 159 - Sea Mist.

This is what the Rowan website has to say about it :
A merino wool, acrylic and alpaca mix which oozes warmth and sophistication. Plaid has the perfect characteristics for a winter yarn - softness and warmth but with a lovely drape which keeps its shape. Tweed effects are created by tonal colours plyed together giving a quick knit 8mm needle yarn but also a depth of colour which enhances the overall effect of your knitting.
Needle Sizes: 8mm / 0UK / 11US
Tension / Gauge: 11
Stiches per 10cm: 11-12sts x 14-16 rows
Meterage / Yardage 100m/100gm ball
Yarn Specification: Wool Blends
Again, send me an email if you think you might be interested in trading for this yarn, I'll accept pretty much anything in return. Fabric, yarn, patterns - try me!
Wool cotton, shade 945 - light brown x 4 £10
Wool cotton, shade 905 - grey x 1 £2.50
Wool cotton, shade 929 - beige x 9 £22.50

Scarves and Mittens
I finished 2 more scarves at the weekend. First a child's sized one in Phildar Terre Neuve. This is an insane yarn, and not something that any self respecting adult would wear. For kid's clothes, its perfect. This one is for a gift but I have another skein that I'll use to make one for Brooke, she loves it.

Next is another gift scarf, this one is in Colinette Fandango. I used 6mm needles, cast on 20 stitches and worked in stocking stitch until the yarn ran out. It made a scarf that was about 50 inches long, a respectable length. I have some other skeins of Fandango ready to become scarves, I think I'll use 15 stitches and a slightly longer length.

These bring my total scarves made this winter up to 18. Most of them are destined for gifts and some are going to be sold at a craft fair in January. I had aimed to make 50 (but that was pre Nano). Maybe 30 is a more realistic target now.
I've also taken on a mitten mission, I'm making 3 pairs of mittens for 3 and 5 year old girls and an 8 year old boy. The 3 year olds are nearly finished and I'm going to use the same bright colours but in a different stripe combination for the 5 year olds. The only difficulty I have is for the 8 year old boys. I know nothing about boys, do they have to be navy blue or can I stripe them? Anyone out there have any ideas about what an 8 year old might like?

MiniChicPoncho
I loved making this pattern, Bonne Marie is a very talented designer, don't you think? For some unknown reason I thought that Rowan Cork in Bug would be a good choice for this mini poncho. It knitted up so quickly and the stitch definition looks great in Cork. It came out slightly under gauge but still fits really well.
I decided not to make the shawl collar that goes with the pattern, I think I'll only wear it over my denim jacket and I love the way that the collar fits through the neckline.
I'll try and get some proper modelled photos next week, we have a bit of a camera situation at the moment. Until then you'll have to be happy with this photo of my girl modelling the jacket / poncho combination and Brooke pretending that it fitted her!

PS - found out today that 2 people close to us are expecting babies next May. is it something in the air?

Bucket Numero 3
I finally made one that fits her!!

This was made out of Kureyon and only took just over 1 skein. That means I can make another slightly smaller one for her little cousin for Christmas. I tried to keep the colours similar, (most of the blues and purples from the skein are left) especially on the brim where the yarn is held double. It took a bit of time to work out that I was starting from the same place in 2 skeins so that the stitches would match.
Did I mention that I made all 3 buckets flat and stitched them together? I have a real aversion to knitting in the round and I'm really pleased with the seams. Looking at the top I don't think its too obvious that I stitched one of the decrease seams together is it? Here is a side shot that shows the colours nicely.
She was going to wear this to school today but as it is BBC Children in Need day she was having a pyjama party at school. Imagine all the mums walking to school, holding the hands of little people dressed in PJs and dressing gowns. How cute. All the staff were dressed in PJs as well, it looked really cute.

Progress update
This is for my own benefit, I just want to get a grip on where I am with lots of different projects :
Baby shoes - soles finished.
Fantasia Sweater - front and back finished. Arms this weekend.
Giboulees Sweater - back and arms finished. Front early December.
2nd Falaise bucket - just started.
Mum's christmas present - swatched.
In addition, we went shopping last night and Wayne saw a hat in GAP that he liked and actually asked me to knit one for him. Shock horror! Its a 1 x 1 ribbed hat, orange border and then neutral to the top. I'm sure I have stash yarn that I could use, need to make the most of him actually asking for something to be knitted!
We also saw this cute spotty dress in GAP that I'm going to try and recreate for Brooke. I've got lots of wool cotton laying around that I think I could use. If I get it done in time it can be part of her christmas present.

I also liked this one but Wayne wasn't so sure. One step at a time...

That's it, I quit with Hotmail. If anyone ever wants to mail me and give me half a chance of being able to read the mail and (gasp!) heaven forbid reply to it then you'll need to use my new email address. kerrie @ kerriesplace.co.uk
Remove the spaces don't you know! I'll still check the hotmail for old times sakes but I'm moving away from it.

In, round, through and off.
For the last few weeks Brooke has been showing more and more interest in my knitting. She has been sitting on my lap, holding onto the needles while I knit and muttering "in, round, through and off" under her breath. This is a little knitting mantra, don't know where I know it from but it works!
I spotted a child's knitting set in a store a few weeks ago and bought it for her. On Friday night she made a comment about how she wished she had her own needles and wool and voila - I pulled out the child's kit. It has about 5g of lots of primary colours and a pair of tiny coloured plastic needles.
She sat on my lap, I cast on 6 stitches for her and she held the needles herself while repeating "in, round, through and off" to herself. She has to remind herself to pull the yarn tight so sometimes it changes to "in, round, tightly Brooke, through and off" So cute!
We decided that I'd do the first stitch on each row for her as this was where she kept dropping them. After 2 rows she had a nice little cm of knitting destined to be a Barbie scarf. Wayne was watching the 2 of us and made a comment about her being just like her mum. 2 minutes later Brooke announces that she is bored of pink and wants to change to another colour. We end up changing colours every 2 rows - stripy Barbie scarf.

When it was time for bed, Brooke picks up her little plastic bag, tucks the mini skeins of yarn back in and asks if she can keep her own wool in her room. She tucked it into the drawer with her underwear and pulled it out again as soon as she woke up on Saturday. Again Saturday night and Sunday morning. The Barbie scarf is now about 2 inches long.
It means that I didn't get as much of my own knitting done but who cares? What could be nicer than your 3 year old daughter sitting on your lap and knitting! Love her!
PS - we were talking about our trip to visit Becky in 2 weeks time and Brooke looked up and said "Mummy, can I bring my knitting with me?" Of course you can darling, the more the merrier!"
Still sick but better than yesterday. Working from home so that I keep my germs to mysef!

Mini Bucket
Its amazing what a couple of hours in front of the TV can do isn't it? Presenting the Mini Bright bucket!

I love this little hat, the only problem is that it doesn't fit Brooke, its not deep enough for her head. I have enough of the yarn left to make another one and next time I'm going to add a couple of stitches to the first band and also pick up more stitches for the top. That way the flat top will be larger and so the hat should be deeper.
I used pink for the band, pink and orange together for the brim until the cast off where I used only orange. I tried every trick that was suggested to minimise roll and it worked. I used single yarn instead of double, picked up fewer stitches and used K1P1 cast off. I'm happy with the way it worked out. This is the unblocked hat that you see in the photos. The top of the hat used orange.
I'm sick today so just about to crawl back into bed and sleep for a while, hopefully that will help me feel better so that I can get on with some work this afternoon. I have too much to do to be sick!

Another busy weekend, it was
It was another busy weekend in our house, we had lots of visitors for the day on Saturday - 2 babies in my house!! Heaven.. Not a lot of time for knitting or writing but I did OK.
Saturday night we watched Star Wars Episode 2, attack of the clones on TV. Hence the yoda like title. I fell asleep and missed the last 10 minutes but apart from that I really enjoyed the film.
Sunday we were going round to some friends for dinner so Brooke and I spent the morning making deserts. We took along a trifle and a vanilla cheesecake with strawberry sauce. Yummy! Cheesecake is one of my favourite deserts and now that I successfully made one I think its going to be a regular recipe in our house. Gorgeous.
Last night we stayed up late again watching John Q. No matter how many times I see this film it still reduces me to a crying, sniffing wreck. I defy any parent to watch it and not be overwhelmed with raw emotion at the struggles they go through. Its an amazing film.
Again, not much time for writing or knitting but I did manage around 5000 Nano words and half of the front of the MiniChic poncho. I still love this, not sure if I'm going to follow the pattern for the collar or improvise a little, we'll have to wait and see.
Especially for Claudia and Mariko, here is the yarn that I'm going to use for the pink and orange bucket o chic hat for Brooke. I managed to find an extra skein of orange falaise hidden under my bed at the weekend, remember I didn't make the hood on the orange tunic because I thought I didn't have enough? Well I would have been able to make the hood but now I'm going to use it for a furry hat instead.

I cast on for this on the train this morning but only managed to complete a few rows. I'm thinking the band is going to be pink and the brim orange and then I'll see what I have left for the top. It can be striped if necessary!

Tres Chic..
Here is the tres chic Bucket O chic hat having been firmly blocked for the last 2 days. I found that a fruit bowl turned upside down on top of a roll of kitchen paper was the perfect size. I still have problems with the brim curling (yes Claudia, that's why it was all pinned out in the last photo) but I like it.

I'm going to make my next one out of Rowan felted tweed and I'm going for a slightly snugger fit. this one
is a little large but really comfortable. I have plans for a felted one after that as well as a couple made out of Colinette Chenille. Christmas knitting here we come! Oh, and Brooke has just reminded me that I'm going to make a pink and orange fur one for her as well.

Chicknits updates
Bucket O Chic hat - started the crown on the train this morning hope to finish at the weekend if possible. It looks a little odd at this point don't you think? All pinned out on the ironing board.

I finished the first side of the MiniChic poncho in my lunch hour yesterday, seriously - that's how quick and easy this pattern is. I was marginally under gauge so it has come out about an inch smaller than the pattern requires all over but it is still going to fir just right.
I decided not to show you any WIP pictures of this as it will be finished nice and quickly next week - that way I can just show you the finished and modelled one!
I'm doing some housekeeping around here, you'll notice that the gallery and free patterns have disappeared. They'll be back next week some time in tip top condition, never fear.
Wayne and I went to see Kill Bill last night, I wrote about it on my non knitting blog if anyone is interested. Have a good weekend everyone, my priorities are write loads of Nano novel and finish bucket hat.

mail problems
Is anyone else frustrated by HOT mail at the moment? I've been struggling to send any mails at all for the last 3 days. Constant crashes and long long pauses. I'M BORED NOW!!
So I've quit for a while. If you're one of the many people who has emailed me at this address and is waiting to hear from me, I'll get back to you as soon as I can. If you have received any mail from me in the last few days, think yourself lucky. Every one I send is a little miracle at the moment!

Random
Have you seen what Theresa and Wendy have planned? If you can spare a little, go and donate to their good cause, I think its a great idea. In just one day they managed to raise enough to purchase nearly 3 knitting baskets. Great job!
My bucket hat is 2/3 complete. I've finished the brim and just need to pick up another skein of wool cotton from the store so that I can finish the top. I was sure I had 2 skeins of wool cotton in cream but can I find the other one anywhere? Oh well, its a good excuse for a shop isn't it.
In other Bonne Marie knitting news I cast on for the Minichic poncho last night. I'm using Rowan cork and its knitting up beautifully. You're sure to be surprised at the colour I chose, I know I was!!

Leftover hat
If Alison can make leftover vests then I can make a leftover hat! I had planned to use the same patterns from the poncho in it but ended up just striping it.

It turned out a little big for Brooke with her plaits in but it fits comfortably over her big hair so I guess that's OK. I love the way it looks from the top, it reminds me of a crocheted hat for some reason, don't ask me why.
She really likes this one and has worn it to school for the last 2 days. Look at her smile bless her...
On another note, look what Johanna made recently? Its a little snowman fingerpuppet from my Knitty pattern. How cute is that? She has adapted the pattern to make a Christmas set of finger puppets, I can't wait to see the others.

Bucket o chic hat
I cast on for the Bucket o chic hat last night, joining in with Becky's knitalong that she has organised. I love the look of some of the fluffy ones that are out there at the moment (Silvia and Claudia) but I'm not quite brave enough to go furry. As I mentioned in Becky's comments last night I'm going fluffy instead.
I've chosen to make my first bucket with Rowan Wool Cotton and a mohair yarn held together in cream. Its looking so soft and fluffy, I just can't wait to finish it. I've nearly finished the band, surprising how quickly this hat knits up. I might even be wearing it by the weekend. I have plans to make these for Christmas presents if the first one turns out OK, its a great pattern. All credit to the talented Bonne Marie for designing it.

Poncho princess
Look what my mummy made for me :

Isn't it gorgeous? I'm not so sure about the fringe though, what's that all about?

Ooooh - now I look like a ghost! Wooo. Hey, why is she wearing my poncho? Mum, tell her that its mine!
Its finished and we all love it. Even Wayne had good things to say about it. Here's the usual list of all the things that I changed about the pattern :
1. I used Patons Hip Hop and GGH Goa on 6.5mm needles instead of GGH Via Mala.
2. I changed the colours around.
3. I knit it flat instead of in the round, I find that I actually enjoy purling fair isle - all the yarn is the same side as me so it's easier to keep track of what you're doing.
4. I changed the increases so that I wasn't increasing on the pattern rows. This made it look neater in my opinion.
I also made her a little hat out of the leftovers which is equally cute. I'll show you photos of that later this week.
A big thank you to Alison for organising this poncho along, I'm so glad that she reminded me about this pattern and gave me the chance to make it!

S S S Sunday..
The poncho is blocked, seamed and all the ends woven in. I'm fringing this afternoon and hope to get it modelled to show you tomorrow. Tuesday at the latest. It is so cute, even Wayne likes it!
I've got lots of odds and ends left over in the yarn so I'm planning on making her a matching hat, should be a nice quick knit. This month is all about ponchos, hats and Bonne Marie's designs. I'm going to start work on her Minichic poncho next week and also her Bucket o chic hat along with Becky and the others. I'm looking forward to choosing some stash yarns for these maybe later on today.

Nearly poncho time!
I finished the poncho this afternoon!! Yay, now all that is left is to finish weaving in all those ends, seam it up and add the fringe. It looks like its going to fit Brooke just right, I made lots of changes to the pattern so the shape is slightly different from the one in the Rebecca magazine but I still love it.
Most of the remaining knitting was done last night. After my stressful day there was nothing better to do than to watch Friends repeats on TV with a bottle of wine, Snickers ice cream and the poncho. Very relaxed and productive at the same time. Wish I could report the same progress on the novel, I need to have a bumper day tomorrow to make up for the lack of writing over the last couple of days..

Doh!
Did I do something wrong in a previous life? My company are bg on volunteering in the community and I signed up to volunteer on a schools link programme that they offer. I suppose I kind of pictured myself reading to 6 year olds who would all look up at me with wondrous expressions and enjoy the time I spent with them. When I was asked to facilitate an interview and presentation skills day for a group of 16 year odls I agreed, even though it wasn't what I had expected.
So that was today. I'm home now, tired and miserable. Why did I get the bad group? I feel so negative now about young people in general. On the one hand I'm glad I made it through. There were 2 tutors in the same room and they were great, the head of the school even caught me at lunchtime and apologised for my group and said she would understnad if I didn't want to complete the day. I'm stubborn. So I feel good that I did it and didn't let them see how intimidated I was but wish that I could have had one of the other groups. The collection of girls who all hugged their facilitator and wrote pages of lovely comments about her would have been good.
Read more details below if you can stomach it. Lets face it, the weekend can only get better right?
So. The facilitiators all picked a folder out of a box which contained your student's group. We then filed into the front of the assembly hall and had to stand up, introduce ourselves and say which group we were working with. Probably about 150 kids in the room. The ones that stood out were at the back of the room, not wearing uniform and feet up on the tables. Somehow I sensed that they were mine!
I wasn't wrong. If they had given themseves a chance I'm sure they could have been intelligent kids. Or should I say if society had given them a chance, who knows where the blame should lie. They blatently weren't interested in anything. Didn't want to talk to me, didn't want to tell me their names. I asked them to tell me about their work experience. Every one of them either quit or was sacked.
After confiscating all the pens, pencils which were being used to fight with and mobile phones which they were texting each other with I moved them all around and tried to go through the days plans.
We practised writing CVs (resumes) and filling out application forms. We had mock interviews "tell me about your strengths" "I'm the king at everything man" We had to prepare a poster with what we learned today on it and stand up and present it. Guess what? They had learned "nuffink" and no-one wanted to talk. I got them all up there with me but had to do the talking myself.
Apparently it was an achievement that they made it to school. Most days they don't. I started with 10 and finished with 5. Only 2 of them came back from lunch voluntarily, the others were "persuaded" of the ones that were persuaded a couple had to leave in the afternoon due to questionable activities at lunchtime.
The only positive I can think of is that we finished the list of things we had to accomplish. Mainly because they didn't want to talk or do anything! One of the other facilitators was a local policeman. On the way out I joked with him that he should have had my group, he looked at me and said "I know most of them anyway"
So, would I do it again? Yep - like I said, I'm stubborn. Next time I'm due the nice girls though. OK???

Tree sweaters
Have you ever seen a tree wearing a sweater? Now you have..

This photo was sent to me by my friend Mel who dared to leave London and move home to Australia just after my wedding! See that lovely blue sea in the background of the photo, I think that alone is a good enough reason to leave London don't you think.
There is part of a cliff path sculpture exhibition that she visited recently, don't you think it looks cool? I think they should do something similar in London, in fact I might go and start sewing sweaters onto trees in Hyde Park and see if people think I'm insane!
Poncho news - I'm on the final pattern, only another 2 inches or so to go. I tried it on Brooke last night to see if it was going to be long enough and it looks as though its going to be just about right. Wouldn't it be nice if I had it finished over the weekend?

Poncho procrastination
I am the queen of procrastination. Honestly, give me a project that I don't want to work on and I'll find a million other things to do first. Take the green zig zags on the Rebecca poncho for example. I've only worked one row of them and then decided that it was too annoying and that I'd start something else instead.
So I cast on with 3mm needles and some multicoloured cotton and made these. No prizes for guessing what they're going to be?

Its been ages since I made little shoes, I can feel the craze coming back again. So small, so much progress in such a small amount of time. Why did I ever stop making these?
I'm working from home today which gave me the chance to spend a couple of hours on the Nano Novel this morning before I started. Its going good! I've decided that Friday's are going to be my day off so I need to get the word count up high enough before then so that I don't feel like I'm missing out..
To answer a few poncho questions, I am knitting it fair isle - carrying the yarns along the back. I'll probably use the long ends that are at the end of the rows for seaming (I like to seam in the same colours as the knitted fabric) From someone who doesn't like to knit in the round I have to ask why it might be harder to fairisle flat? It seems OK to me, but then I do like a challenge!

Poncho news
Its official. I love this poncho. I'm at the 2nd green zip zag row and I just know I'm going to feel so much happier when the next 4 rows are finished. I really don't like doing these zig zags, not sure why. I'm only managing a couple of rows a day now, there are so many stitches and with the Nano Novel I just don't have the same amount of time as I used to.
This is how it looks so far :

Whoops, sorry! Silly me, that is the wrong side. This is how it really looks so far :

Is it my imagination,
or are these weekends getting shorter? It doesn't seem like 5 minutes since I got home from work on Friday and here we are, Monday morning again.
We took Brooke mini trick and treating on Friday night in her witches costume. Only to Wayne's sisters and his mum's house. She had a great time frightening them. It didn't go so well with the trick or treaters who came to our house. The first time the doorbell rang, Brooke rushed to answer it, opened the door to find 2 young boys in monsters outfits, complete with masks and scary hair. I turned around to get some chocolates for them, heard the front door slam and turned back to see Brooke crying her eyes out "dont open the door, there are monsters out there" she sobbed. I opened the door, apologised to the boys and asked them to take off their masks so that she could see that they were just children like her all dressed up. She wasn't convinced. She wouldn't answer the door any time it rang after that and wanted to know how the monsters turned into boys. I chose to ignore that question and change the subject whenever it came up!
Saturday night was our local Fireworks display and true to form we were late. Anyone who knows me will know that my obsessive timekeeping fails to make an impression on Wayne's constant lateness and so every time we leave the house as a family we end up being late. This time we ended up parking over a mile away from the park with less than 10 minutes to the start time. There was nothing for it but to run. Brooke on Wayne's back and me just trying to run! Just under 10 minutes later we arrived in the nick of time for the fireworks, Wayne and I bright red and breathing heavilly and Brooke shouting "faster faster" She enjoyed the display, swapping between mine and Wayne's shoulders and telling us both off for talking. "the fireworks don't like it when you talk. They think its rude" Needless to say we were exhausted when we got home and all slept well.
Sunday was househunting. Just another thing to throw into the melting pot of chaos and confusion that we live in. It was good fun though, driving around our chosen area to live writing down the numbers of estate agents and getting thoroughly lost. Our little back seat passenger shouting directions all the time...
In the middle of all that I managed to knit another few rows on the poncho, I'm half way through the pattern repeats now, and have increased from 60 stitches to just under 200. The end figure is about 270 if my menory is correct so I just know that the 2nd half is going to be much slower progress. I also made a great start on my Nano project. It now has a working title and nearly 4200 words so I'm well on track there. Keeping it up during the week is going to be a challenge but I'm sure I'll manage..

6 things for a Saturday
1. I owe Stacy a huge thank you for the wedding gift that she kindly chose for Wayne and I. How lovely for someone that I don't know that well to send a gift. Thank you Stacy!
2. I'm in love with this shoulderwarmer. by Stephanie. I have to have one!
3. I found this link to the new stitch and bitch book throgh knitpicky. i love most of the patterns, this book is definitely on my Christmas list. Did you hear that dad?
4. I posted my November list last night. Isn't it short?
5. I'm starting my Nano novel today, wish me luck. I'm actually surprisingly excited about it!
6. I'm nearly halfway through the Rebecca poncho. Mind you , I have doubled the number of stitches that I strated with so I don't expect the 2nd half to go so quickly. I still love it though!
