Amy Butler bags
I love receiving parcels in the mail, last Friday was a double lucky day when orders from Threadbear and Antique Angel landed on my mat.
The boys at Threadbear kindly sent me patterns for the Keepsake and Gypsy shawls, I'll be starting Gypsy soon. I didn't get on with Charlotte and after 3 attempts where I got to 70 rows and realised I had made a mistake early on I decided to quit it. I'm hoping for more luck with Gypsy. Did you see Carolyn's keepsake shawl? I can't believe how HUGE it is. Go and take a look..
From Antique Angel I received some Amy Butler fabric and patterns. I am so impressed with their service, within an hour of me placing the order online I had an email from them asking me if fat quarters were OK instead of a yard of fabric as they were out and 3 days later the most beautifully presented parcel arrives, with a little hand written note and gorgeous fabric. See how pretty it looked?
Great customer service, I'll be ordering from them again no doubt about it.
So I had to open the packet and start some of the bag patterns, didn't I? I decided to work on the In Town bags first as I don't have the heavyweight interfacing needed for the Chelsea bags.
This is the handbag (made from IKEA colourful fabric Kaffe Fassett orange fabric) which I'm not 100% happy with but seeing as it is the most complicated thing I've sewn so far I guess its pretty good considering. If I made it again I would make the handles longer and secure them further onto the bag body as well as make the inner pockets smaller. I love the way the orange of the lining picks out some of the colours in the outside. I may make another in the exact same colourways!
Then we have the drawstring bag, without the drawstring! I guess that makes it more of a tote but whatever you want to call it, I love the fabrics. The flowery and striped are Amy Butler, the pink and and the check are just from my collection of fat quarters. Cool huh?

20 second knitalong progress
As you can imagine, the teeny tiny baby hooded Jacket that Alison and I are working on is nearly finished. Well, at least it would be if I hadn't come across one slight problem...
Notice anything missing from that picture? Yep, that's right - I've mislaid one of the sleeves! I have no idea how I managed to do that and didn't even notice until I had everything laid out to block at the weekend and suddenly went, uh hello = where is that second sleeve?? If I dont find it soon I'm going to have to reknit it! Everything else is knit, blocked, seamed and blanket stitched though.
I can honestly say that the detail on this jacket took almost as long as knitting the pieces. All that blanket stitch was interesting - I've never tried it before and it took me a while to get the hang of it - the intarsia patch was fun to knit but time consuming to sew on and although there aren't that many seams to sew or ends to weave in it still took me a little while.
I love it though, the finished jacket looks so cute, even with only one sleeve. Keep your fingers crossed for finished photos tomorrow or the next day depending on whether I find / reknit that second sleeve!

Change of Poncho plan
You know when you have something all planned and organised in your mind and then something comes along and changes it? I was getting all excited about the Giotto poncho, I finished the 3rd main colour on Wednesday night on the bus on the way to Liberty and having wrapped the material around my shoulders worked out that I needed to work one more colour before the poncho would be long enough.
I had in mind something that would come down a couple of inches below my shoulders, a little shorter than last year's Mini Chic poncho. This is a nice length for still being able to use your arms at the same time!
Then along came Brooke on Thursday morning. Stroking the fabric and saying "That's a pretty colour. What is it?" A poncho, I explained. "Like the one my auntie Jenna has?" she asked. Similar, I explained. "Wow, thank you for making me a poncho like my auntie Jenna has!" she squealed "its pink and shiny and looks so posh. Thank you mummy! I love it."
Anyone like to tell me how I could keep it after that?
I promptly bound off, made two small tucks in the neck at the back so that it could make the transition from adult to 4 year old and voila. Her own little pretty pinky poncho..
Now, I have lots of Giotto left in golds and greens, what do you think the chances are of actually getting one of these made for me? Matching mother and daughter Giotto ponchos anyone?
Click on More to see some extra funny photos. I have no idea about the wriggling her bum one, it made her laugh for ages though so I guess that was the whole point! The final one is of her kissing her baby, I thought it was cute so I included it, even though you can't see much of the poncho..

First attempt at patchwork
I take back all I ever said about football. Well, at least some of it! Last night Wayne was out watching the Euro 2004 Quarter Final - England against Portugal and Brooke fell asleep early on the sofa. This left me at 8pm wondering what to do for the rest of the evening.
I seamed the Giotto poncho, photos of that early next week some time. I'm really happy with the way it came out, even though the plans changed at the last minute!
Then I decided to put some of the fat quarters I bought from the Liberty sale to good use. Wayne complained recently that I'm only making girl things and that I should get more boy focussed just in case this baby turns out to be a boy. Good point. So I picked up the striped fat quarters in blues and greens and decided to practice my patchwork techniques on a crib sized quilt.
Well, what can I say apart from I obviously need the practice? Now, any of you proper patchworkers / quilters out there please feel free to snigger quietly at this. I know, I know - its hardly a proper quilt now is it? Measurements are approx 30 inches wide by 36 inches long and its made up of 12 large squares. Hardly rocket science you may think, and you'd be right. I had enough trouble getting all of these squares the correct size and seaming them with the exact same seam allowances. I'm so not a proper sewer* yet!
Having said all of that, I'm pleased with the way it came out in the end. I have some plain white cotton which I'll be backing it with and I want to find a colour to bind the edges with. Probably a plain blue would be good. So on Saturday its off to the fabric shop for wadding and plain blue fabric for the edge. It makes me want to put all of my lovely pink material to good use and make Brooke a single bed sized quilt, perhaps I'll leave that for another day though!
* see, I don't even know the proper terms? Knitter, sewer - whatever!

Stash enhancement updates
The other week, Linda pointed out to me that Texere were giving away free yarn. Never one to miss such an opportunity I placed the order and my GIGANTIC box arrived at the weekend..
I was a liitle disappointed with the yarns - but then what can you expect for free! I had in mind that there would be a number of small skeins / balls making up the 7kg but it ended up being about 10 large cones. Some of the yarn is dusty and the box smelled really musty and yuck so I took it all out of that straight away..
A few of the cones are great, some are not what I'd ever use and 3 of them went straight in the bin. I'm going to give the ones I won't use to Brooke's school for crafts and save the others for shawls / scarves in the winter. See, when I finish work and go on maternity leave (the countdown is now into days!) - I'm not going to allow another skein of yarn into our house until I'm back at work next Marchish. So I'll have plenty of opportunity to enjoy knitting my stash up.
Then (because I can never pass up a good sale) I popped over to the Liberty sale preview evening last night and picked up a few bits. Nothing major, just some Calmer in black and 2 skeins of Kid Silk Haze in beige. Oh, and 10 fat quarters which having been discontinued were on sale for 90 pence each. Stay tuned for a cot sized quilt in the next couple of weeks.. I didn't stay long and was very restrained with my purchases, partly because I dont have room for anything else and partly because I didn't want to carry it home on the train!

Giotto poncho
I started the Giotto poncho the other day. I really wanted to use the Mini Chic pattern as I mentioned last week but was worried that with so many oddments I wouldn't be able to get the 2 pieces even enough to make me happy.
So I started working on a different design. To begin with I was striping the different colours every 6 or 7 rows, changing colours in the middle of the rows to make sure there were no ends at the sides. After about 8 inches I decided I didn't like this effect and ripped it all back. Now I'm going with colour blocks, using up all the yarn I have in one colour before moving onto the next. We'll see if I like that any better!
I'm basically just making a long rectangle which I'll fold and sew together somehow to make a little poncho. I didn't want it to be very long and I'm happy with the width. I'm hoping that including the oddments that Anita sending sent me, that I can get away with using only the pinky colours in this poncho if possible. I'd like to save the greens and golds for poncho number 2 but I'm not sure if I'll have enough.
Here's the progress so far.
The variations between the colours in this photo looks much more pronounced than in real life. They are all different but look to blend together better in person. I hope this closeup shows you how the green is carried through the centre piece and into the blue while the blue also contains some purple that is picked up and continued with the 3rd piece. You can also see the 3rd piece is scattered with little pieces of blue which match the blue stripe perfectly. I'm excited about how this is going to look when it is sewn together.
I'm also surprised at the way the first 2 main colours have worked out. They looked like totally different amounts before I knitted them, one was wound in a ball and the other was in a skein. I could have sworn that there was a lot more of the first colour but it seems not. I'm onto Anita's colour now, doesn't it look good? Having used u pone of the mini balls she sent over I guess that it is going to turn out to be about the same size as the other 2 main sections. How fortunate!
I had tiny small amounts of a few colours which I'm using in between the main colours. I decided just to knit until the yarn ran out so all of the colours are joined in the middle of rows, this leaves the edge neater.

Amy Butler
I blame Leigh, really I do. We were just having a nice conversation over email about sewing etc and all of a sudden I find a link to Amy Butler's site in my inbox. Harmless enough, or so I thought.
One hour and I'm not going to tell you how much money later, I've ordered 2 patterns and the fabric to make them from the 2 UK suppliers of Amy Butler fabric and patterns. Antique Angel and The Quiltroom.
So, just as soon as the parcels arrive I will be the proud owner of a Chelsea Bag and also an In Town Bag. Oh, and how could I forget the pack of fat eighths of Temple Flowers that just fell into my shopping basket!
Its nice to know that some of the Gypsy Caravan fabrics are still available in the UK, I ordered a selection from their range and also the Temple Flowers range. Gorgeous, gorgeous fabrics..
Is sewing the new knitting? Only when I get the time in the house on my own. Knitting I can do while cooking dinner, hanging out with Brooke, watching TV. The sewing machine can only be pulled out when no little interested fingers are around to "help" so its a rarer opportunity but just as much fun as knitting..
Thanks for the votes on the elephant / giraffe patch question. I can't put one on the front as its a jacket and the buttons would be in the way but what I think I'm going to do is make oe of each and then let Brooke decide.

Spoiled rotten
This was a fantastic Saturday afternoon treat! Thoroughly Modern Millie at the Shaftesbury Theatre. I had a great weekend, filled with lots of quality family time, some Wayne and I on our own time and a fantastic half an hour in the middle of the night with Brooke when she was wide awake and I lay in her bed with her putting the world to rights and talking about the most amazing subjects. It was one of those times when I honestly didn't think I could love her any more, and then she would say something amazing and suddenly I did. Beautiful..
I didn't knit much, there didn't seem to be time! However, the joy of making teeny tiny baby clothes is that a little knitting goes a long long way. Probably a total of 4 or 5 hours over the last few days and this is what I have to show for it.
Pardon the curls and the general crappiness of the photo!
This is the back and arms of the Phildar Hoodie with animal patch that you can see over in my WIP list on the left. I decided that beige was a more boy / girl neutral colour than navy - and I just happened to have some beige Patons Cotton rich in my stash which knits to a similar gauge and feels so soft. I'm making the 3 month size so this really will be complete in no time.
You may recognise the pattern from Alison's blog. We decided to have a mini Alison and Kerrie knitalong in June as she is making this for a friend's baby. I'm not sure if you've started yet Alison but it really is a quick and easy make. Stocking stitch and minimal shaping doesn't make for the most exciting knit in the world but the speed at which you can see it coming together makes it worthwhile.
Now the only question is, giraffe or elephant patch on the back?

Ladies Day
Excuse the blurry self timer photo!
Don't we look posh? Wayne and I had the opportunity to go to Ladies Day at Royal Ascot yesterday and we took it.
I decided not to buy a new frock as the chances are I would never wear it again so instead I squeezed into a stretchy navy number I had in my wardrobe and bought new hat, pashmina, shoes and accessories. I only saw 2 other pregnant women there, most of the others looked like they hadn't eaten a proper meal for months!
We may not have won any money but we had a great time people watching. (one of my favourite ways to pass the time!) There were lots of posh hats, horses and men in top hats and tails. We took lots of pictures which I should try to sort out at some point over the next few days. It was a long day, but a good day.
I'm pretty tired today though. All I have to do is to try and stay awake for the rest of the day at work and then the rest of my birthday weekend is going to be full of treats. I've already had Happy Birthday sung to me half a dozen times by Brooke and the day has only just begun - it can only get better from here.
I still think the hat looks cuter on Brooke though!

Le Top
I love this Phildar stripy tube top pattern. I also love that I have most of the yarn that I need for it in my stash (if you mix up Phildar Licorne and Rowan Cotton Glace which are about the same gauge anyway)
What I don't love is that I couldn't wear it until next year. Still, no harm in starting to knit it now is there?

Anouk revisited
Here she is, Anouk for a 4 year old. It actually came out a little large which is OK, at least it will fit her for a wihle.
I used a larger gauge for this Anouk, All Seasons Cotton on 5mm needles, and based the sizing on a denim pinafore dress that Brooke has. I'll write up the numbers and gauge that I used and post them here as well as sending them to Kate later in the week.
The pockets turned into a bit of a nightmare, Brooke was not impressed that I used the pale blue from the bottom of the dress for the stalk of the flower. No artistic interpretation in this house - flower stalks are green and she would not wear the dress with the pockets any other way. She then decided that she didn't want pockets at all so I decided to make some little flowers for the front, kind of like the ones on Jillian's Folly.
When she saw the flowers being made she was excited. When she saw them on the dress she decided they looked like snails. Lucky for me snails are deemed cool otherwise I would have had to think again!!
The verdict? Small Anouk is cuter than large Anouk but I like them both.
No bonus photos this time, motivation for anything other than sitting still in front of the fan and eating ice is scarce in this house at the moment!
I'll be back on Friday with pictures of tomorrow's day out to share.

Poncho plans
Everywhere you look at the moment seems to be about ponchos! Remember that I decided to use the Colinette Giotto oddments to make a poncho? That was the easy part of the decision! After much fretting about which pattern to use etc I decided to go with what I know and make a version of Bonne Marie's MiniChic poncho which I made and loved last November out of Rowan Cork.
Her pattern calls for 650 yards of bulky weight yarn. I estimate that I have probably about 600 yards in my oddments stash (anyone with any little ends of Giotto, you know where to send them!) so if I make a couple of changes to the collar it should work out OK don't you think?
I also have a few skeins of Koigu allocated to making a poncho out of. Not sure which pattern to use or whether I should make up my own poncho but that is going to be a fun project for the autumn..
Non poncho related plans for this week have gone slightly awry, I was due to go to Brighton races yesterday with my team at work but had to make the judgement call that this 32 week pregnant body wasn't up to a day of trains, beach, sun and racing so I worked as normal instead. Hope to see at least a stick of rock or some candy floss on my desk when I get in this morning!
Its my birthday at the end of the week and Wayne and I have a day out planned for Thursday that I thought was going to be a leave home mid morning, get back early evening kind of day. Turns out that its more of a leave home at 7, get home about 9 kind of day - again, not sure if I'm up to that so we're negotiating with the other people at the moment. Another option is to borrow a car from my sister so I'm sure I'll work something out. If my car hadn't been broken into last week, I'd be able to drive us there which would have made the organisation easier. As it is it is likely to be in the garage being fixed until at least the end of the week. Bleugh. That's another story and not one that I feel like thinking about at the moment.
If you were expecting to see photos of Brooke modelling Anouk 2 - check back tomorrow. I had some stresses with the pockets but it should be ready for a modelling session tonight! She tried it on last night and its actually a little on the large side which is good. I was happy with the pockets but she didn't like them and after a little deliberation I decided to take them off and go with her idea. After all, if she doesn't like it she will never wear it and what's the point in that?

Its a pattern party
I did almost finish Anouk 2 at the weekend and I think I would have made it as well if I hadn't wasted a couple of car journeys knitting away with 1 5mm and 1 6mm needle and NOT NOTICING until about 6 inches later how odd it felt. Hmm, interesting. Riiiiiip that back to the normal rows then!
The front and back pieces are both knitted, ends woven in and tabs attached. I just need to finish the pockets and then persuade my lovely model to wear it. That part shouldn't be too hard given that it is :
a) a dress
b) pink
c) has flowers on it
Actually, I expect that she will be queuing up for the chance to try it on. Although now I've probably jinxed it!
However, I did get organised on Saturday afternoon / evening and wrote up a multitude of patterns that I've been threatening for some time. Really, what else is a girl to do when the football is on and she is still sulking at Anouk after the odd sized needle incident?
These are all linked from my main free patterns page but I give to you :
The 4 newborn hats
The sewed trousers
The Wigwam tank
Jen and Chris - I also wrote up the patterns that you agreed to test knit for me "properly" and they will be in the post with yarn either today or tomorrow.
See, I can do organised, sometimes!

Once upon a dream
I'm in Sleeping Beauty mode at the moment (not only because the idea of sleeping for 100 years sounds very attractive right now) but because I have the once upon a dream song stuck in my head. You know the one that goes :
I know you, I danced with you once upon a dream. tra la la la
Today the words that I'm singing are :
I know you, I lived in you once upon a dream. tra la la la
Yes, that's right - we've exchanged contracts on our new house! Woo Hoo! That means that it is all legal and going ahead, now we just have to wait for them to finish the build. Just a minor point that our dream house is still not built yet, it doesn't even have a roof.
Fingers crossed for a moving in date BEFORE the baby is due, at the moment the builders are quoting end of July (due date 12th August) but we may be moving out to stay with relatives before then if the new people want to move into our existing house any quicker. I'm just relieved that it is all done and dusted.. Now to pack up our stuff with a vengence!
What a good excuse to go out and celebrate this weekend, don't you think?

Don't forget to vote!
Its that voting time again, today we get to vote for London Mayor and European Parliament. At least there are no local elections at this point, otherwise we would have been busy with the BNP knocking on our door canvassing for votes. They did OK in our area last time, I was just waiting for them to knock on my door so that I could welcome them in and discuss their racist views and policies. Oh well, maybe next time..
So if you're in the UK and get the chance today, go vote!

Big Baby
Yes, its official. Family, friends, strangers on the street and now my midwife are all telling me that I'm too big for my dates. True, my midwife told me in a much nicer way than the woman in Body Shop who screamed across the shop floor in horror when she learned that it wasn't twins and I still had a couple of months to go but the message was the same. The unscientific method of midwife and tape measure tells us that the baby is big. Lets not panic and just wait and see what happens in 2 weeks when I go back!
I also discovered that the fainting was due to iron deficiency so I'm on iron tablets now. I think the hot weather and packed trains are adding to the problem. I worked from home yesterday and even sitting in front of the fan couldn't keep cool for long.. Its good for all the non pregnant people out here but not sure about me!
Anyway, big or not I still love my bump. I heard that wearing black had a slimming effect, apparantly not always though!

The picture on the wall has one photo of Brooke every month from newborn to 1 year. We need to get something similar for the next baby, I love looking at those tiny little photos and seeing how she has grown!

Summer trousers
I bought some beautiful lightweight patchwork fabric from John Lewis a few weeks ago and had no idea what to make with it. Brooke also fell in love with it and I decided to be kind and use a little of it to make something for her. The hot hot summer weather we've been having recently made me feel more like sewing than knitting so I pulled out the fabric and my machine and came up with these.

They are a simple pair of wide leg, cropped summery trousers with an elastic waistband. She liked them so much she didn't want to take them off. Perfect for riding your bike in. They could be worn with either side as the front, typically she chose the brightest colours, leaving these more pastel colours at the back.

Kerchief details
Like Emma was saying, I haven't found anywhere online that you can buy this pattern. (If you google any part of the design or designers name you come across Emma's blog!) It is called Caryn's kerchief and designed by Marian Nelson. The copyright info has a postal and email address, PO Box 49000 Borrego Springs, CA 92004, patternwrite@dslextreme.com but I don't know how current these are.
Its such a cute pattern, 1 skein of Koigu, 4.5 mm needles and some beads. If anyone finds an online source let me know and I'll link them..
I thought I'd copy the helpful comment from Duc on the post below here so that its easy for everyone to see...
"For your information: The "Caryl's Kerchief" scarf pattern can be purchase from Marry Huges of www.foxyknits.com. The kit is not display on the website but if you contact Mary, she will tell you about it. She send thing all the time to UK in the most economical way and she is a "Brit" herself as she said."
Woo Hoo - thanks for that Duc!

Caryn's Kerchief
As I mentioned yesterday, Emma tempted me away from all my existing knitting last week with a cute little pattern that called for 1 skein of Koigu. I cast on for it on Friday and finished on Sunday, the only difference between the pattern and my completed Kerchief was that I couldn't find the right sized beads to finish it with. Trust me, this is a pattern I'll be making again and again, next time with beads.
You can see an alternative way to wear it here. This other picture shows the shape of the completed garment really well and you can't beat this photo if you want to see the lace pattern in more detail. I really enjoyed making this, it knitted up quickly, the lace pattern was easy to memorise after only a couple of repeats and best of all it used up just 1 skein of Koigu. Who could ask for anything more?
Head cut off from all photos for obvious reasons. Well, obvious to me after a day of heat exhaustion followed by being stuck on packed commuter train for 1 hour between stations and fainting. Trust me, it was scary!

Friday night I looked after my 15 month old niece so that Wayne and his sister could go and visit their younger sister and her brand new daughter in hospital. Brooke and I had a crazy few hours entertaining her favourite cousin ever, it was good practise for me at trying to look after 2 kids at once! Now with 3 girl children in the family the pressure is on me to come up with a boy, only 9 weeks to go and then we'll see!
The weather was really hot here at the weekend, I'm beginning to struggle. I spent yesterday hiding in the shade at mum and dad's while everyone else ran around in the sun and Brooke played in her sandpit and watered everything that she could see in the garden. I think I'm one of the few people who is praying for a cool summer in the UK! Especially while on the trains in the morning, its becoming unbearable..
Knitting wise, I'm sort of stuck in a bit of a rut at the moment. I have a few projects on the needles but seem to be hopping from one to the other and not really making any real progress on them! Temptation from Emma in the way of a cute little project that used up 1 skein of Koigu distracted me at the weekend, its blocking now so should be able to get photos of that up soon. So in an effort to organise myself, here is a reminder of what I need to get done and when I should really do it by..
Anouk 2 - front done, back done up to colour change. Aim to finish by weekend.
Onde tunic - pick up as soon as Anouk finished, aim to finish 2nd piece by following weekend.
Big Bad Baby Blanket - pick up as and when and finish before baby is born in August!
Hooded baby jacket - swatched and cast on. Finish by end of month.

what else?
Anyone recognise what this might be?
It's my version of the Big Bad Baby Blanket from Stitch n Bitch book. As McDonalds would say "I'm Lovin it!"
I made a few changes (no shocks there then) and initially decided to work the seed stitch borders in one colour of Koigu and the 4 panels in the center in 2 other shades of Koigu. I couldn't find the right colours for the middle so I ended up using Jaegar Matchmaker Merino 4 ply instead. Its working out well.
I'm only about 6 inches in at the moment so still have a way to go before finishing. It was a good knit to take on the train with me on Wednesday, thanks to Carolyn for her constant untangling of the skeins for me!

Busy busy week
From last Saturday through to yesterday I feel like I haven't stopped for a minute! We picked Carolyn up from the airport on Monday afternoon and Brooke promptly became her best friend. The tears are still happening this morning now that Carolyn has left for the airport. Seemingly Brooke is going to "miss her loads and loads every minute" Bless...
We spent yesterday up near Darlington visiting with Emma, Linda, Chris and Tracy. What a gorgeous day it was! Chocolate cake, fudge, knitting and good conversation in the sun, who could ask for more than that.. I believe that there were a number of digital cameras in bags but we were all too busy gossiping to remember to take photos, doh!
I'll post some photos of the weekend over on TopBgirl at some point today..
Knitting wise, I've been busy writing up patterns for the last few days. I did get time to finish the front of Anouk 2 though. What do you think?
The colour here isn't completely accurate, its more of a dark pink / magenta type colour. Wayne pointed out that it is almost claret and blue (west ham colours) but that wasn't the intention when Brooke chose the yarn. At least, I don't think it was..
Anouk 2 is the upsized, upguaged version knit in Rowan All Seasons cotton to fit a 4 year old. It was quicker than I thought, probably something to do with the larger gauge. I need an extra skein of the pink yarn but I'm hoping to finish it over the weekend sometime. It is going to look so cute!

Back to the real world..
Bleugh. Back to work today - bit of a shock to the system.
Good news - we picked Carolyn up from the airport yesterday, Brooke is now her new best friend. The first words out of her mouth this morning were can I go and see if Carolyn is awake?
Good news - we're going to visit Emma and a bunch of other people tomorrow. Woo Hoo!
Good news - fantastic long weekend, lots of stories to tell but no time now.
Good news - lots of knitting progress but again, no time to share.
Back on Thursday with something more interesting. I promise!
