Gifts in the mail..

Look at the gorgeous gifts my secret pal sent over...

ponchogift.jpg

Brooke loves her crochet poncho, its a gorgeous red colour. The fluffy trim around the edge is her favourite part.. (excuse the mess in the background, we move house tomorrow so we're surrounded by bags and boxes at the moment..)

sockfeet.jpg

Mr Cameron is the first person in this house to ever receive or wear hand knitted socks. Aren't they cute? I don't make socks and I've never seen a completed pair of hand knit socks, how sad is that? They look gorgeous on his little feet, if anything is going to inspire me to get over the sock phobia it could be these socks..

Thanks secret pal!

Gypsy 2

A weekend in the life of a Gypsy shawl to be...

Friday morning, the postman tries to deliver a package of Koigu but no-one is in. Package taken to post office to await collection.

Saturday morning, package of Koigu is colleted from post office, stroked, admired and then placed in WIP bag ready to turn into Gypsy shawl.

Saturday evening, yarn is cast on and first 50 rows are completed in front of DVD box set of Spooks series 2.

Sunday morning, 5 further rows are knit while on-line.

Sunday afternoon, 10 further rows are completed in the car on the way to Bluewater.

Midnight Sunday, first 105 rows done. Stocking stitch section complete and lace section started. Approx 60 rows left to complete before end of Tuesday.

Lacy lap blanket

So, the lacy poncho swatch that grew and grew eventually turned into a lacy lap blanket for the boy. *

lacylapblanket.jpg

I will be using the pattern to make a poncho, especially now I see how easy the lace pattern is and how pretty it looks when it is blocked. Even if I did purl instead of knit a couple of rows!

* I know Wayne, I'm not sure that boys need lacy lap blankets either but until you got the heating working the other day it was really cold downstairs in the mornings and this was just the right size! All his other blankets seemed too large for him to snuggle in on his little red chair..

Snap

They match! Or at least they match to within a half a row here and there. It hasn't been too much bother getting the sleeves the same so far, I think I have been lucky with the skeins I've chosen. I've just started them in the same place and they seem to be pretty much identical so far. Fingers crossed that I stay that lucky through the 2nd piece of the front..

Welcome to the house of mad..

I can't believe how busy things are around here at the moment, we'hre moving house next Wednesday which means there is a whole lot of packing to be done in the next few days. I gave Brooke a quick lesson in how to assemble a flat packed box yesterday and armed with some sticky tape and a pile of boxes she soon earned her lunch.

Cameron on the other hand is less helpful. He is now smiling and laughing which may be cute most of the time but when you're trying to teach a 4 year old how to assemble boxes and all you can hear is a chuckling noise coming from a small red bouncy chair it can be a little off putting! Having said that all this chuckling seems to be tiring him out as for the last 3 nights he has slept from 10pm to about 4am. Woo Hoo! More than 3 hours continuous sleep, maybe that's why I feel like I can do anything at the moment.

So, packing boxes. That's keeping me busy. I'm also finishing off the curtains for the new house (4 sets to go) and knitting the 2nd sleeve on my Agnes cardigan. I was going to show you photos of that but I think I may have packed the camera cable. Unless laughing boy happens to know where it is I may be unpacking one of the boxes to try and find it.

Then it occurs to me that there is a birthday next Thursday that I was supposed to make a Gypsy shawl for. Not only do I have less than a week to knit it (allowing for time to block / fringe) but all my Koigu is packed up and in storage. Does that put me off? Oh no. I simply place an order with Sue from Get Knitted and decide that as long as the Koigu arrives before the weekend and I'm prepared not to do anything else in the fragments of spare time I get there just may be a finishd Gypsy around next week.

Not that I'll be able to show you it for a while, although we move on Wednesday there will be no phone line or broadband in the new house until around the 8th October. Good job I have enough other bits to keep me busy isn't it?

My first knitted coat!

Look what someone wore for the first time yesterday!

cameronjacket.jpg

I don't very often get a chance to look at the back of his head. Him wearing this jacket has made me realise that its not really worth
decorating the back of clothes
meant for children under about 6 months, until they can sit up by themselves you're never going to see it.

And for no reason other than I think its a cute photo, here is the doting big sister looking after her little brother yesterday.

Dreaming of shawls

Like I don't have enough on my plate at the moment, last night I dreamed of this shawl in the new Knitty (which I love by the way, its my favourite issue so far!) Scroll down to see the interesting construction, I love the colours she used and happen to have 3 skeins of black Kid Silk Haze in my stash and 1 pink. Maybe a slightly smaller version is in order here sometime?

As I'm in a shawl / wrap / poncho mood today, I'm also thinking about this one (again from Knitty) in All Seasons Cotton..

Lacy Poncho (ish)

I'm sure you've all seen Bonne Marie's lovely Lacy Poncho pattern which I bought a copy of last week. I have a HUGE cone of unidentified cream yarn that I got free from Texere a while ago that I decided to use to make this.

lacyponcho.jpg

However, I feel a bit bad about showing you the picture and claiming that I'm making the Lacy Poncho for a couple of reasons..

1. I just looked closely at the detail photo that Bonne Marie posted and then at the pattern and realised that I've made a mistake with the lacy pattern.* I like the way it looks so I'm keeping it this way
2. I'm not making a poncho.

Apart from that its the lacy poncho, honest! I decided that I'd work 1 pattern repeat a day until it was finished but in the last 2 days I've worked 8 repeats (the photo shows it at 5) Its a fantastic pattern, quick and easy and I'm loving it.

*that's what happens when you dont print a copy of a pattern and just scribble the notes out in shorthand on a piece of paper.

Agnes, again

I've been working a little on Agnes every now and again. I've now finished the back, the first sleeve and the left front. See - I have half a cardigan to show for it..

agnes2.jpg

I forgot that I was going to make 3/4 length sleeves until I was almost finished with the first sleeve so full length it is! I'm still trying to decide whether to try and match the stripes on the sleeves and the cardigan fronts. I'm leaning towards matching them as I think the odd stripes will annoy me.

Giboulees one more time

So you remember that I finished the Giboulees sweater before Cameron was born? This is how it looks on.

gibon.jpg

Sleeves = gorgoues. Top half fit = OK. A little tight but as soon as I stop feeding the young man myself 12 times a day it should improve. Length = WAY TOO SHORT.

I know, I should have realised this before now but its hard to tell when you're pregnant what is going to fit you after the baby. Especially when 99% of winter sweaters have been packed away ready for the move to new house and the ones that are left to compare it with are designed to cover your bum.

So here we are. How shall I go about lengthening it? I've come up with these ideas :

1. unpick the cast on edge, pick up the stitches and knit down. (never tried this)
2. pick up the stitches at the cast on edge and knit down. (would end up with ridge)
3. knit a strip and seam to cast on edge. (would have to be something other than stocking stitch to work I think Maybe an eyelet pattern?)
4. learn to crochet, make some granny squares and attach to bottom edge. (learn something new now, are you insane??)
5. unpick seams, rip out front and back to armholes and add to length. (no)

Any other ideas?

One Month

It hardly seems possible that its been a whole month already, I cant remember what it was like around here before Cameron was born. Here are a few up to date shots of the little man..

You can blame me for the hair, I love to spike it up while he feeds!

Brooke likes to put toys in his hand and let him hold them for a minute

Please excuse Brooke's scary hairy!

I'm sure I used to be her mum..

Brooke is taking to motherhood even better than I could have hoped. Yes, you heard me correctly, she thinks she is Cameron's mum (and my mum too sometimes!) Oh how the roles have been reversed in this house at the moment. She fusses over Cameron all the time, wiping his mouth when he is a little sick, even changing his nappy by herself (as long as it isn't too gross!)

Maybe its second child syndrome but I am a million times more relaxed with Cameron than I was with Brooke. This doesn't mean I ignore him when he cries but I certainly don't run through the house at top speed to get to him at the first sound. I also don't feel the need to change his clothes if he is a little sick on the shoulder after a feed, surely that's what baby wipes are for? Cutting his toenails, bathing him and washing his hair are all far less stressful than I remember them being with Brooke, probably because I know this time around that he is unlikely to break easily and that if he cries for a few minutes while changing his nappy he will survive. Even if he doesn't agree.

Brooke on the other hand rushes to him as soon as he makes a noise saying "its OK Cameron, I'm here. What's the matter, shall I get mummy for you. Here let me hold your hand. Shall I sing you a song?" At the same time she will be frantically beckoning me to come over and when I (eventually) get there she'll say something like "didn't you hear him cry? He's hungry. Please feed him" or "the poor boy wants someone to play with him. If you're too busy please can you move him so that I can lay down with him and sing his favourite songs" Yes Brooke, of course I can.

She also mothers me although not to the same extent as Cameron. She reminds me to take my vitamins and stops me from doing things like going to hang out the washing in my PJs. Don't I know that the neighbours don't want to see me unless I get dressed and that I shouldn't go outside with no shoes on? Hmm, yes I think I remember saying that to her once or twice..

As soon as Wayne comes home she runs to the door to give him a run down of what has happened that day. How long Cameron slept for, whether he was sick or cried a lot. She's totally in charge of our house during the day, my job seems to be just to feed the 2 of them and help with anything that she can't manage on her own like driving the car, cooking dinner and reaching things down from the shelf in her bedroom. Other than that I just obey orders to move Cameron to various rooms in the house while they play tea parties, read books, sing songs and play with her Barbies. He should think himself lucky that she hasn't tried to put a dress or make up on him yet although she does like brushing his hair and I caught her sitting in front of him with some hair clips yesterday before I confiscated them. He sometimes looks at Wayne when he gets home in the evenings as if to say "why do you leave me with these 2 girls all day? Don't you know what they make me do?" Poor boy..

Tomorrow he is 1 month old. Doesn't time fly? I'll post some new pictures in the morning so that you can see what a chubster he is turning into.

While typing this entry with Cameron sitting in his bouncy chair on the floor and Brooke playing on the Barbie website he started to hiccup. After 3 hiccups Brooke turns to me and says "mum, cameron has the hiccups" When I told her that I could hear him but didn't jump to his rescue she sighed, got up from her chair and went to sit and stroke his hand until he felt better. "mummy is too busy but I'll look after you Cameron" Its lucky that one of us is a good mum isn't it?!

Outgrown knits

With the move to our new house coming up at the end of this month, Wayne and I have been ruthlessly packing away all of Brooke's clothes that are too small for her. In the last 4 years we have gathered bags of her clothes in the loft that we were saving for the next child. Now that Cameron is here we've given away a lot of her girly clothes that he won't be able to wear and kept those that he can. Now I'm faced with a pile of handknits that she has grown out of. Small selection below.

outgrown.jpg

Orange falise tunic, fairisle Rebecca poncho, pink wraparound cardigan, multi fantasia tank top, mission tank, pink and purple cropped sweater, striped hat, phildar cotton vest, Rebecca dress, blue fairisle hat

What do you do with children's handknits when they have grown out of them? Keep them in storage? Give them to friends / family / charity shops? Rip them out and use the yarn again? I'm stumped. Also curious about what everyone else does, any other suggestions?

Ribbon Twisting

Wayne and I popped into Bluewater over Bank Holiday weekend for a couple of reasons. After buying the important things that were on our list I sneaked into John Lewis and picked up 6 skeins of Rowan Ribbon Twist in ripple and the booklet that goes along with the yarn. I fell in love with Ava and decided that I deserved an aysemmetrical chunky poncho for the winter. Don't you think?

10mm needles + chunky yarn and a cropped poncho pattern = a nice quick and easy project to give me a break from the tiny teddy needles. I love it, what do you think?

ava.jpg

Because I'm such a fiddler, I decided to seam the poncho together with the right side of stocking stitch showing instead of reverse. It looked pretty good either way but this was my final decision. Anita is making it the proper way in what would have been my 2nd choice for yarn colour until I saw this one, her's is going to be gorgeous..

The Ribbon Twist yarn is nice but won't become one of my favourites. Its basically just a chunky weight yarn with a nylon tape ribbon twisted around it. I do like a lot of the patterns in the book but I think that the yarn could be substituted for a similar weight yarn without causing any problems..

It took me almost as long to take photos of the completed poncho as it did to knit it. Well, maybe that's a slight exaggeration but these were the only self timer ones I managed to get of me wearing Ava. And yes, they are both headless for a reason. I mean really, what new mum has time to brush her hair?! Not great, I think you'll agree. Maybe I'll ask Wayne to help at the weekend.

UK to France..

Especially for the lovely Christina and anyone else who is interested, I thought I'd tell you about how I get to France for my Phildar pilgrimages..

Firstly I make my way down to Dover. This only takes me about an hour and a half and I tend to leave home about 7am so that I can get an early ferry from Dover to Calais. Each time, I've travelled with Sea France on their £5 foot passenger rate, I dont take my car.

The crossing takes about an hour and a half and when you get off at Calais there is a complimentary bus that takes you from the port to the town centre. There are 2 bus stops in town, for the Phildar store you need the train station stop. Cross the bridge, walk down the hill and turn left as you go past the market type place on your left. The Phildar store is about 200 yards on your left. Woo Hoo!

Getting the early ferry means that I get to Calais at about lunchtime. The Phildar store closes from 12 - 2 so this is the opportunity to get some lunch, look at the other stores and buy some yummy french chocolates. Then back to the station for the bus to port and on the ferry back over to the UK. I've never ventured any further into Calais than this but I'm sure there are more stores if you keep walking down the Phildar road.

Phildar have a list of all their stockists on their site, that's how I found the details for this one. If you ever get chance to go over from the UK its well worth a visit.

Girl Poncho

Do you remember that orange girl fabric that Mariko sent over to me a while ago? I had no idea what to make with it but knew that Brooke loved it and wanted to use it all. The day before her birthday she insisted that I make her something out of it and for want of any other ideas, I made her a poncho.

brookegirlponcho.jpg

The most simple design in the world. Cut the fabric into a square, seam all edges. Cut a slit in the center for head and seam. Put on child. The excess fabric was used to make a blanket for her dolls, everyone happy! It also makes an interesting hat!

She has worn it a lot around the house but hasn't been outside in it yet. I still think the pattern is a little loud but as she loves it so much I'm sure I'll let her wear it whenever she wants to. She did wear her Colinette Giotto one the other day to the shops, bless her.

This and that.

I found the Phildar magazine that the bear pattern is in. It's magazine 401 which is full of cute cute patterns. The only slightly annoying thing about this mag is that they show a sweater in blue as design 6 with full pattern and then in pink as design 10 with exactly the same pattern. I don't understand this.. I buy the magazines in French and work straight from the patterns without translating them, this works well for me. Brooke and I usually take a couple of trips a year to France so that I can stock up on Phildar goodies and she can enjoy the ferry and French chocolate shops! We must get a passport for Cameron so that we can take him with us before Christmas..

Mr Cameron is still doing well. Wayne has gone back to work now so I'm home with Brooke and Cameron. The first day went well yesterday, I think as long as I find plenty for Brooke to do we'll be fine. We're braving the public transport system and venturing into central London to see my work colleagues, that should be interesting.. Yesterday we took him to the Health Visitor to get weighed, he's a hefty 11 pounds 5 now. I love big babies!

Thanks for all the kind comments about the latest MagKnits! Frida is definitely on my knit list, I'm sure I know someone who would like one for Christmas..

Little boy blue knits

Its about time I knitted something specifically for this little boy don't you think? I know he has the blankets that I made that we're using and he will wear the hooded Phildar jacket with the elephant patch as soon as the weather gets a bit cooler but they were all knitted before he was born. Now that we're in a bit more of a routine I've started to pick up the needles again for an hour or so each day. Having a boy means that all my Phildar / Rebecca kids books are like new again as I've only ever really looked at the girl patterns in them.

I found a cute pattern in one of the Phildar magazines (I cant remember which one but I'll find out) and started it a little while ago. I've almost finished the front.

kerriephildarbear.jpg

I know that starting with the front is unlike me but who could resist knitting that bear? This is how the finished sweater looks in the mag, cute isn't it? I love the little feet at the bottom!
