I'm on a roll
Its only 8.15 and I've been up since 6.30 this morning - which is early for me! In that time I've managed to get me and the kids fed, washed (showered and hair washed for me), dressed, and packed up for school. I've replied to all my emails and baked a lasagne for dinner tonight in case I'm not back from setting up the stall in time. My sister is looking after Cameron this afternoon and picking Brooke up from school for me (thanks Jen!) and I want it to be as smooth as possible for her. I've made sandwiches for the kids snack time and bottle's for Cameron, I don't think I've forgotten anything.... The only thing I can't do for her is promise that there will be no poo nappies to change, she's on her own with that one! Everything else I think I can just about get ready for her though..
The only jobs left to do are print out some patterns (the printer let me down badly on this one) go to the bank and get some change and set up the stall. I'm hoping to be sitting at home with a glass of wine and the kids in bed by 8 tonight so that I can relax before tomorrow. What odds do you give me?

Not long now.
Today is the last day that I'm going to be able to get things sorted for Stitch 05. My sister is coming over tomorrow afternoon to look after Cameron and pick Brooke up from school so that I can go and set up my stand and then Thursday morning I'll be making my way over there nice and early. I'm so excited. I still have a couple of things to finsih off today and some labels / signs to write up. Then the only other thing to do is to check that my insurance came through, I haven't heard anything back from them so I hope its all going to be OK.
I thought it was about time I showed you a teeny, tiny amount of the things I've been working on to sell in pattern / kit and ready made form.
First there is this skirt, sample here made from Amy Butler Gypsy Caravan fabric. Do you recognise Brooke's big sister shawl?
Then there is this dress, made in Rowan Kaffe Fasset fabric and lined in pink gingham.
One of many fabric bracelets, this one made from Cath Kidston material. The others are all made from Amy Butler / Cath Kidston fabrics. This one here is mine, I love it!
Some little bags and purses made from Amy Butler fabrics.
There is lots more. We have blankets, cot sets, more clothes, toys, bunting, badges, more clothes and more baby stuff. Its all packed into 3 big suitcases at the moment but will be heading over to Olympia tomorrow afternoon. Woo Hoo!
You should hear from me tomorrow night with photos of the stand and then not again until next Monday. Good or bad, I'll let you know!
PS - for those of you who came in through the front door here you will have noticed that I'm gradually changing the site. Starting with the first page, the others will follow shortly..

Big day for Mr C
Yesterday was a big day for our little man. 4 weeks today I go back to work full time (sob) and yesterday was his first full day in nursery. We thought that it would be good for him to go in one or two days a week for a while before he starts there full time and yesterday was it. Wayne took the day off work so that I wouldn't be sitting at home crying all day (thanks Wayne!) and after we dropped him off and saw that he was happy and playing with toys we took off to IKEA and then out for lunch before getting back in time to pick up Brooke and Cameron.
Cameron is going to a nursery near home which makes it nice and easy for dropping off and picking up from school and nursery. Their finish times are close together so we'll always either have both of them at home or both of them at school. He was really pleased to see us when we picked him up and apparantly had a good day. We only rang once to see how he was doing and when we called he was playing out in the garden! How sweet...
We've got a busy Easter weekend planned so I probably won't be back until Tuesday. Wednesday I'm setting up for the show and Thursday to Sunday I'm at the show so I hope to get chance to post photos of my stand on Wednesday evening. Its getting close now isn't it?

Felt-time fun-time
I've been playing with some little fun felt things for the last day or so. My favourites are the little baby shoes, they are so teeny!
The bunny is a pin cushion, I found a little pom-pom for the tail and sewed on some eyes after taking this picture.

I finally caved
I've been resisting for ages. I'm one of those stubborn people who usually decide not to knit something that has turned into the most popular knit in the world. I don't know why. There is just something about owning the same knitted garment as millions of other people that doesn't do it for me. For me, knitting is individual. I like knowing that I own something that no-one else owns and when I see something being made on nearly every blog I visit it puts me off.
Until now that is. I cast on for Clapotis yesterday which has to be one of the most knit patterns at the moment in blog land. I'm using some Rowan Wool Cotton that I discovered at the back of my cupboard yesterday in the ever so exciting black colourway. I know its not as interesting as many of the other Claps that I've seen out there but its a good go with anything colour, don't you think? I haven't made it very far - this is all I have at the moment.
I really need to get some new stitch markers don't I? Emma sent me some beautiful ones a while ago but I mislaid them in the move..

Country Living Spring Fair
The fair was good on Thursday, lots and lots of inspiration. I managed not to buy anything significant which was also good as unpaid maternity leave leaves you with a slightly unhealthy bank balance. It was good to see how everyone was displaying their products and how the different stands were set up. I'm not sure about the Business Design Centre as an exhibition hall though. It was set on 3 levels and with only one lift at one end and lots and lots of stairs it wasn't very pram friendly.
Here are a few of my favourite finds of the day.
Babyface children's bedding company. Gorgeous quilts and other accessories.
Joanna Wood. I love the gingham Easter chicks which can be found under products, seasonal products. How cute are they?
All the fun of the fair. They don't seem to have a website but they make GORGEOUS hand knitted toys. Love them.
Beth Design. Really interesting ceramics and painting. Made me wish I could buy everything that I saw on the stand.
The Win Green company. Doesn't everyone need a play cottage like this?
Welligogs. Need I say more? How cool are these kids hand painted wellies? Its a good job Brooke wasn't there with me!
Seesaw. Cute cute kids clothes.
Rachel Coleman Designs. Makes me wish I was a million times better at painting than I actually am.
Mole and Cheese. My favourite stand of the day. Love the egg heads.
Hannah Lamb. Love the lapel pins.
Daizy Lake. Chocolate temptation. Oh well, only another week to go until the end of Lent....

Proto-bunny
I'm planning to make a whole basket of bunnies for Easter presents this year. I came up with a basic pattern for a teddy bear which I've made successfully but I'm having problems converting the ears to bunny ears. In theory it sounded simple, just make them narrower and longer with a bit of a point at the end. In practice, I can't get anything that I'm totally happy with.
This is the current proto-bunny. More practice is needed. His ears are still too fat. I think he looks more like a mouse gone wrong. Perhaps I should just make Easter teddies instead?

Spring fair, and it almost feels like spring today!
Thanks guys! I was just feeling a bit insecure yesterday, all the lovely comments and emails has done my ego some good and I'm not as worried today. I got lots and lots of sewing done yesterday so all the ready made stuff that I'm going to be selling is now done. How exciting is that? All I need to do now is to finish up the last couple of patterns and get them all to the printers. Then when my fabric orders arrive at the beginning of next week all I have to do is to put the kits together.
Stand design is still something that I'm thinking a lot about. Sue is being very kind and putting up with emails from me asking dim questions about what I'm allowed to do to the walls etc. I have lots of ideas but I'm just not sure if they will work. I'll be checking out all the stands at the Country Living fair today, I'm not really looking to buy anything. Just scope them out!
Remember the baby blanket that I made for Cameron out of cotton fabric and fleece last year? I've made lots more to sell, they are the perfect baby blankets for taking out and about in the car and the pram. Not too warm and not too thin, they are snuggly and also look good. I've got a pile of 30 of them all stacked up in my spare room and they do look good enough to eat! Here are some of them all stacked up before I got around to sewing them. Yummy, yummy fabrics!

When I grow up...
I think I want to be Amy Butler. Seriously. I'm sitting here now feeling terrified about exhibiting at Stitch 05 in a couple of weeks time. Trying for the life of me to work out how I'm going to lay out my 6 square metres of space and how I'm going to show everything I have. I'm panicking on the one hand that I don't have enough stock and on the next that no-one is going to want to buy my stuff that I can feel a total melt down coming on.
I've been rummaging around online for inspiration and I found these gorgeous photos of Amy's stands at various fairs. Now do you see why I want to be Amy when I grow up? I'm taking a trip to the UK Country Living spring fair tomorrow for more inspiration then by Friday all of the material for my kits should have arrived so guess what I'll be doing all weekend? That's right, packaging up fabric and patterns and yarn and keeping my fingers crossed that it all looks as good in real life as it does in my head. Someone remind me why I'm doing this?

Hat
As well as the red T shirt I made Brooke a red (ish) hat to wear to school on red nose day. I haven't been able to get a half decent picture of her wearing it, this is as good as it gets!
It took just over half a skein of Colinette Prism in raspberry. I used 5mm needles and just made the pattern up as I went along. It fits her really nicely and she has worn it every day since last Friday so it must be OK. Here is an action shot of the red hat on some kind of tyre swing on Saturday in Queens Park - it was a lot of fun for Brooke but slightly scary for me to watch her!

7 months, and counting
Thanks for all the nice comments on the red nose day outfit. For those of you not in the UK here is the link to the official red nose day site. Comic relief raises money for various different charities every year by encouraging people to buy red noses and generally dress up in funny clothes.
Cameron is 7 months old now. I can't believe how grown up he seems. The little man doesn't sit still for a minute, he has his own version of crawling where he doesnt move his legs at all but drags himself around the house using his arms. He can move quickly and in this new house of many stairs we are going to have to get the stair gates up quickly. He's also discovered how to stand up. This means that when you try to put him down on the ground he keeps his body straight and doesn't bend so that he gets to stand up for a minute. He is so funny, he stands there holding on to your fingers with a huge grin on his face like he could rule the world. He doesn't realise that you are supposed to walk - standing up is enough for him.
The noises he makes are surprisingly similar to Brooke. ba ba ba ba ba is his favourite which he shouts from his cot in the mornings and mutters through a mouthful of food at dinner times. He says da da da da da with a big smile on his face accompanied by lots of arm waving which is exactly what Brooke used to. Again, like Brooke, he says ma ma ma ma ma when he is sad, crying or desperate for attention. charming, winge my name and enjoy your dad's. Thanks Mr C!
He starts nursery 2 days a week next week and I'm half looking forward to the few hours on my own and half dreading it. It means that the time for me to go back to work is getting closer which will be both good and bad. I've had a great time at home with Brooke and Cameron for the last nearly 8 months but it will be good to get back to the world of adult conversation and earning money again. I only wish I could have the best of both worlds, earning money while staying at home with the kids. Dream on!

Red Nose Day
Last night, at about 4.30, Brooke, Cameron and I were sitting at the table in the kitchen sharing cheese sandwiches and talking about all kinds of nonsense. Suddenly Brooke comes out with
"I'm really looking forward to red nose day tomorrow mummy. I can't wait to wear the T shirt you made me."
Huh? T shirt that I made you? Oh no! This was something that we spoke about with Jenna about 2 weeks ago and I totally forgot. Do you think I could distract her? No. She insisted that I had made her a T shirt with a red heart on that she could wear to non uniform day today. So what could I do? Cut up some existing clothes and raid the button box that's what.
This is what she ended up with. I cut up an old red T shirt of Cameron's and sewed a heart shape onto a plain white long sleeved T shirt. I then found some red star shaped buttons which I sewed to the bottom and some red mini pom poms for the neckline. She liked it which I guess was the main thing! Phew...
We couldn't leave Cameron out of the red nose festivities so we let him wear Brooke's old West Ham kit which is a little big but very cute on him. Standing up while holding onto your fingers is his latest trick!
Happy red nose day everyone!

Calmer Tee
I finished the sewing on this yesterday morning and promptly wore it for the rest of the day. I love the way the Calmer feels so soft and the fit is perfect. I added a couple of inches between the waist and bust shaping and it is just the right length for me. I was a little worried about the sleeves but they also fit just right. This is without a doubt my favourite knit for myself ever.. I think the only thing I may do is to take out the neck and pick up fewer stitches next time as it seems a little too wide. I need to wear it another couple of times before I decide that though.. (From looking at the photo I can also see that I need to wear a black bra underneath it as well. Whoops!) The photo really doesn't do it justice, it looks much nicer in real life!
Specs - Alison's Nothin' but a T shirt pattern from MagKnits. I made the 38 inch size and used pretty much all of 5 skeins of Calmer in black and about half a skein in beige. Next time I want to make one with a fun logo on the front, if only I could decide which one!

Nearly there...
Just one more sleeve to seam. I didn't have time to finish it last night but just one more episode of ER series 3 on DVD should see it good! I can't wait. I sneaked a try on with just one sleeve and it fits beautifully.

Train knitting
Cameron and I had to go into Liverpool St today so that I could meet up with my boss and talk about a few nice things (bonus and payrise - yay!) and a few not so nice things (date to return to work, job spec and hours etc - boo!) Now that we live outside of London I have a proper commute to look forward to. 45 minutes each way on the train and about 5 minutes either side of that from door to door means that its still less than an hour in total but feels like a long while. I used to have a less than 30 minutes door to door..
The good thing about this is the train knitting opportunities. This was the result of just under one journey today, Cameron was awake on the way home so we looked out the window and played games instead. 1 skein of Koigu, a pair of 3.5mm bamboo dpns and 45 minutes total peace and quiet leads to a little productivity. You might have guessed that I'm one of these annoying people who can't sit still for anything!

Nothin' but some finishing
I've finished the majority of my Nothin' but a T shirt, the front back and both sleeves are knitted. All that remains is to pick up the stitches around the neckline, knit the neck and then whip stitch all of the edgings into place. I'm not a huge fan of picking up stitches so I think I'll be putting this off for a couple of days..
I always find finishing the most tedious part of any knitting project. I usually tend to consider a project "done" when I've finished the knitting. I forget about the blocking, picking up stitches, seaming, weaving in ends and all of those other little touches that are needed before something is ready to wear. Sigh. Its a good job I've got a couple of quick and fun sewing projects to get finished off while Cameron sleeps this morning.

softies
Well, the snow it did melt and the roads they did clear and the school it did stay open all day and the children, they did go swimming. So from that point of view the day went well. On the other hand Cameron was ill again. Very sick and high temperature and I could only keep water in his little tummy. Poor kid. My mum came over to babysit and we left him in her capable hands while we went out for dinner, yes I felt mean leaving him but they were all fine. Mum included!! Wayne and I are both pretty tired today though. We got in about 1am and then Cameron was up from about 2 - 3 being ill and then Brooke woke up extra early at about 6ish. Not enough sleep there so I expect there will be naps all round before the day is over!
Have you seen Loobylu's month of softies gallery? There are some gorgeous Alice inspired toys there, I haven't had time to look through all of them yet (there are over 100) but the ones I've seen have been so cute. This month's theme is a difficult one though. "A portrait of the artist as a child" Hmmm, I have no ideas about that one yet..

Sudden Snow
See the picture of the car on the front page here? That's what mine looked like after 1 hour of snow this morning. I decided to drive to school to save the 15 minute walk in heavy snow and wished that I hadn't bothered. The roads were icy, there were more cars than usual and I had to park at the bottom of the road that leads to the school. When I got back to the car after the 10 minute that it took me to get Brooke in her classroom it was covered in snow again and I had to scrape ice off the windows. That's how cold it is here and how much snow we have.
Brooke was supposed to go swimming today with the school. Now they are talking about whether they will be able to stay open all day if this continues. Playground gossip says that the next village on from us is stranded as the one and only road that leads in and out of the village is closed. Speculation as to what time our village will be stranded if the snow carries on like this was going on everywhere.
Its times like this that I almost miss living in London. The snow seems much worse out here in the country but maybe that's just because it is worse this year. I've just got Cameron off to sleep and now I'm waiting for the phone call that will make me get the pram out, wrap us both up warm and head out into the weather to get Brooke from school.
Wayne and I were supposed to be going out in London tonight. I haven't been out with Wayne properly for months. Right now I can't remember the last time we went out with a group of friends as we plan to do tonight. However, if the weather carries on like this, I'll be snowed in the village with the kids and he won't be able to get back home from work. Fingers crossed for a sudden thaw around lunchtime, OK?

Much better now!
Cameron says thank you for all the get better soon wishes. He'd like you all to know that he is feeling much better. Well enough to sneak in on mummy's photo taking and steal pieces of her knitting to play with. That's why he is looking so cheeky in the photo at the top, troublesome boy!
The stolen knitting was one of the sleeves from my version of Alison's fabby Nothin but a T shirt pattern from MagKnits. I started this a couple of weeks ago when I first saw the pattern and decided that it was the perfect use for all that black calmer in my stash. I'm not going to make a logo on the front of this one, I plan to wear it to work when I eventually go back so decided that a plain one would be more appropriate.
As usual I changed a few bits of the pattern to suit me. I decided to make the bottom in a contrast colour as well as the sleeve edges and neck and also decided to whip stitch the hem instead of knitting it in. Not sure why I decided that apart from the fact that I do enjoy whip stitching. I'm close to the bust shaping on the front so there is really not much more to knit. The stocking stitch is a great TV companion, lots of simple knitting and only a little shaping here and there.
Brooke is getting on well with her first week at school. She took packed lunch in on the first day but forgot to eat it as she was so excited to be sitting in a big hall with all the other children eating. So now she has hot school lunches which she really enjoys and from the looks of the menu they are good meals as well. See this smile? That's how much fun she is having at the moment.

Long days night
I don't think I've ever updated here in the middle of the night before! Its about 12.30 in the morning and Cameron is sick. The poor little boy has been ill all day with a raging temperature and vomiting. I've been walking around carrying a hot, heavy, quiet boy who just wants to rest his head on my chest and moan quietly to himself. He hasn't eaten anything worth mentioning but is still drinking milk so I'm not too worried. I think its probably his teeth but I'm always concerned about ignoring something serious and blaming teeth.
After a few hours sleep he's up again with another frighteningly high temperature and we're wandering around the house waiting for the calpol to kick in and get rid of the 39.6 from the thermometer.
I remember the first time Brooke had a temp this high. We rushed her to casualty in a panic where they gave her calpol, stripped her to her nappy and made us wait until her temp was back under 38 then sent us home. Huh? We soon realised that we could do that ourselves at home as long as we made sure we checked her out for any other symptoms.
So here I am with Mr C. This is the first time he has been sick apart from a cold and I feel so sorry for him. He is so unlike his normal cheerful self. I'm looking at him laying on the floor on his blanket and he hasn't even tried to roll over or crawl for the door yet. Poor little chap feels very sorry for himself. 'm going to give him an hour before I check his temp again and I hope its come down. Think we might go and see what is on TV at this time of night, there must be SOMETHING that I can watch, surely?
