OSW
Finally the one skein wonder is finished!! I made the 2nd from largest size so it is a little too big for me really but it will make a perfect sample for the show. I decided against the seed stitch and ribbing borders and went with a picot edging instead. The whole thing weighs exactly 90g which is great news as most of our skeins of silk weigh around 120g so I can safely sell kits of 1 skein of silk and the pattern. Phew.
Please excuse Mr Cameron being in the photos. He was fascinated with the idea of the camera taking pictures all by itself and wanted to be involved. I have no idea what he is pointing at while he is hanging over my shoulder, the only thing in that direction is the bathroom and I can't imagine he wanted to go in there!

Kids room
This is the view from one of my favourite places in the house to sit and knit. (see my foot in the corner!) I'm on the sofa in the kids playroom, watching them play. We are lucky enough in the new house to have a room downstairs with patio doors that open on to the garden that we have filled with the kids toys, a brand new sofa that next door were going to throw away because it wouldn't fit in their new house when we all moved in (they were downsizing, we were upsizing so had many empty rooms!), a TV, playstation and DVD player.
Its so nice for them to have somewhere that they can play together downstairs without the lounge always looking as though the world has ended (although it does still look like that most of the time) The rule is that any toys that are in the playroom are to be shared. Brooke has some of her special toys upstairs in her bedroom so she has somewhere to go and get some time on her own with her dolls house or Polly Pocket sets. The study is next to the playroom which means that I can usually get away with working on the laptop while the kids play next door. Its perfect.

Silk Roses
Brooke and I had a flower day at mum and dads yesterday. I knitted these 10 silk roses while she made some paper flowers.
The silk roses are so quick and easy to knit up and use teeny tiny amounts of the silk. I think I might knit one in each colour of the repeatable silk shades that we offer at HipKnits to show the colours at Ally Pally. I have also been working on shade cards with a difference. Abi and Anna saw them on Friday night over our lovely curry, I should take some pics and show you later in the week. Also putting together kits for the roses and other flowers, why do you think people were looking at me funny on the train this morning while I split 100g skeins down into smaller ones for the kits? Its more interesting than reading the paper I can tell you!!!
I dyed lots of silk for wholesale orders at the weekend, by the end of this month HipKnits sari silk and hand dyed silk will be available in 6 stores in the UK. Thats pretty exciting for me! I think I will update the links page over at HipKnits with details of the shops. Who knows, there may be one near you?

Cupcake anyone?
Isn't this just the cutest hat ever?
I'm trying to distract you from the fact that I haven't finished seaming the one skein wonder yet. Because I decided to go with a different edging (guess which one anybody?) there is a little more seaming to do than the pattern calls for. Monday, maybe?
I'm off out after work tonight with Abi and Anna. I think Abi said someone else was coming along but I can't remember who. It should be lots of fun, I've never met either of them but we decided that it would be good to meet up and go for a curry so Brick Lane here we come.

Shawl Kit and other stuff
I just ordered me a shawl kit from Hello Yarn. Yummmyyy... I'm getting it in a colourway which is made up of pale pinks, chocolate browns and a splash of cherry red. How gorgeous does that sound? I'm really into brown and pink at the moment.
The one skein wonder is just about finished. I didn't do the ribbed edging, I decided to go with picots instead. I am so hooked on picot edging, its odd isn't it? I should have a finished photo to show you tomorrow, excited? I am.
Less than 3 weeks to go until Ally Pally? Now that is frightening. I've got all of the silks ready (and when I say ready I mean dyed and just about dried. I do not mean reskeined, labelled and packed!) but need to get the cashmere and wools done. Guess what I'll be doing at the weekend? The horses are so used to seeing me down there now they don't even move when I walk into the field. They look up and straight back down to eating grass without even considering walking over and asking for treats. They know what I'm there for!
Thanks for the tip off for the circular needles on ebay Alicia, I snapped them up as soon as I checked that metal would work for what I have in mind. very exciting. Now I'm looking out for a similar auction so that I can end up with about 500 pairs.. All will become clear soon, I promise.
I've become a bit of an ebay fiend recently, with all the jiffy bags, boxes, tissue paper etc I need for HipKnits and all the temptation in the way of Amy Butler fabrics. I just bought myself a pack of squares in the charm fabric collection to make up for some that didn't arrive from the US. Leigh made a gorgeous quilt with some recently, I hope I can be as creative.
Oh, and I finally worked out what kit to make up for my BackTack 2 pal. I'm so excited about it! I'm going to start her bag at the weekend and then begin putting the kit together. She is in another country to me so I want to make sure I post it nice and early so that it makes the end of October deadline. I'm aiming for before Ally Pally... Now for my backtack 2 pal, what new hobby am I interested in learning? Hmmm. Not crochet. I'd like to learn more about quilting, get better at spinning, learn to sew proper clothes instead of just super easy elastic waist trousers and skirts. I'm not sure about sock knitting. I've always thought about doing stuff with beads. Sttich markers, necklaces etc. I'm difficult aren't I?

Progress
It seems like its been a long while since I had knitting to show you on this blog!
This is some progress on a one skein wonder in a skein of HipKnits silk. I'm going to make the largest size just so that I can see how far one of our skeins will go and be able to tell people at the Knitting and Stitching show that they can buy the pattern and 1 skein of silk and know that they will be able to make any of the sizes.
This shows the colours of the silk better, its really difficult to photograph and I didn't have time this morning to set up the pics in the same way that I would for the shop. I think you get the idea though? This is a variegated yarn in purple, blue, turquoise and just a smidge of silver for some shiny contrast. The colours are very me...
The stitch markers were a gift from Betsy, I have them in a empty baby food jar and due to the lack of knitting that goes on around here I haven't used them much. Brooke has claimed them for her own and plays with them all the time. When she saw my knitting last night she squealed "why have you stolen my jewels for your knitting?" Hee hee hee

Country Living Magazine
Thanks for all the comments and emails yesterday, isn't it funny how we get tunnel vision and assume that we are the only people in the world to have these problems. Its good to know that I'm not alone and other people feel the same way, I guess that's one reason we have these blogs isn't it, a little reassurance that we're not on our own out there! I'm still feeling a little low but I'll pick up over the next few days, I'm sure.
Every month I buy Country Living magazine. I am obsessed. I love looking at the emporium section at the front where they showcase lots of lovely hand made in the UK things that you can buy. This month my favourite was Emily Burningham and her new range of wrapping papers and cards.
I also love the recipies, features and the classified section in the back which is where I have found some amazing bargains in the past. like the fabric warehouse in Finchley. I have never been but I sent a friend there and she said it was amazing. Cath Kidston and other fabrics for less than 7GBP per metre? I would like to get some material from there to cover my tables at Ally Pally. I know they have a website but I just can't find it right now, I'll link it when I do.
Now, the next question is does anyone know where I can get hold of HUGE amounts of knitting needles at rock bottom prices? I'm thinking plastic would be fine, and not too chunky but the size isn't really important. They can even all be different sizes. When I say HUGE amounts I'm thinking of anywhere up to 500 pairs... Thoughts anyone? I would prefer new ones instead of 2nd hand which is why I haven't rushed to ebay yet...

Friendships
I'm feeling a little down at the moment, no obvious reason for it, just a bit sad. Maybe its the change in seasons, although I love autumn, that is bringing me down. Who knows, there could be many reasons I guess.. I've been wanting to write about this for a while and now seems like the right time, I may delete it later if I get into work and read it back and decide that its just too much for a Monday morning!
Jodi's post about friendships recently got me thinking. I've made lots and lots of good friends online since I've had this website. Some of them have crossed the boundary and become friends in real life, others I know I'll probably never meet but I still consider them friends. It is at the same time both easier and harder to make friends online, easier because you can choose what you share of yourself and harder because you miss out on the important pieces of communication like eye contact and body language that tell you so much about someone.
I would consider some of my online friends to be closer to me than some real life friends who I have known for years. Isn't that odd? I do find it hard to make friends in real life, I think I can come across as snobby when really I'm just nervous about fitting in. That doesn't apply to friendships made online as much though does it?
Standing outside school with all of the other mum's for the first time in a new village can be terrifying. When we moved out of London nearly a year ago, everyone in the new teeny tiny village we moved to seemed to know each other. The children had all been through playgroup and nursery together, the mum's had met at prenatal classes, playgroups and coffee mornings. Standing outside the school in the middle of 30 people who all seemed to be friends, to know each other was horrible. I didn't know where to start. Who to talk to. What to say. Why would they want to be friends with me, they had each other?
The fact that I was one of the few working mum's also made it hard. The other mum's would drop off the children and leisurely hang around the school with their younger ones in pushchairs, chatting while I would run through the playground to hopefully make it to work on time or at least not too late. At first, my life seemed so different from theirs which only made me feel more like an outsider and less likely to know what to talk to them about.
It only took a few days before the "be friendly and talk to anyone" side of me won the battle with the shy, keep your head down and pretend you don't need any friends" side of me and I started making chit chat with anyone that I saw. Now out of that group of mums I have one close friend and a whole pile of people who I chat to in person outside school, on the phone when making kid arrangements and at birthday parties. I no longer feel as though I don't fit in.
That doesn't really happen online does it? I get emails every day from people who I've never met but who read my site and I love it. Some of them become close friends and some of them I never hear from again but it doesn't matter. I love leaving comments on people's sites that I've never emailed before, I love finding a few sites that really touch me and trawling back through their archives to find out more about them and read more of their entries. Although it is much easier to be brave and approach someone by email than it is in person, that doesn't mean that the friendships that are made are any less real.
Recently I've fallen out with one of my close online friends and that devastates me. What makes it worse is that it was totally my fault, I didn't think something through properly and ended up hurting them and I don't think it will ever be the same. That upsets me because deep down I want everyone to like me, I can't stand the thought that people will think that I am not a good person. I'm very intolerant with myself and find it hard to accept that I can make mistakes, I find it easier to forgive other people's mistakes than I do my own. I am a bit of a control freak and don't like to not be able to fix something, but in this case its not up to me to fix. I'm learning to walk away from situations that I can't change, and not let them cause me too many sleepless nights. Having apologised and tried to explain myself, now there is nothing else I can do...
On the whole, the experience of blogging has been amazing for me. Over 3 and a half years (gulp) I've made so many good friends and I'm really thankful for that. Its sometimes scary to think that there are people out there who I don't (and will never) know, who read this site and feel that they know something about me but at the same time I love doing that with other people's blogs. I think I've been almost as excited about Amanda's pregnancy as I was my own, I love to live vicariously through other people's experiences.
Here's to making friends online and in real life. Both different experiences but both can be as good and bad as the other.

Whoops
It's amazing what you can do in the 2 mins that your mum turns her back and runs upstairs to get your sister's cardigan for school isn't it?
It's also pretty amazing that havoc that takes only seconds to create can take HOURS to clean up. Trust me, Sudocream in your carpet is not something you want to deal with.
Can you see the little circle around his mouth where he must have put the whole pot up to his face? The new pots of nappy cream are far too easy for him to open. I must remember not to leave it within reach after changing his nappy...
Brooke and I did laugh though, and she rushed off to get the camera "hold him still for a minute mummy, let me take his picture" Kids?!

Bad day
Its been a bad day over here. While sitting in a 4 hour long meeting with 30 other people today from 6 different organisations TRYING to get them all to agree on Service Level Agreements and failing miserably, I couldn't help but think - am I the only one here wearing hand knitted cashmere socks? I wanted to ask but think it would have undermined my authority rather more than the fact that I am a woman under the age of 30 had already done.

Happy feet
My feet are dancing a little happy dance. They are asking me why I've never knit socks for them? They didn't realise that hand knit socks could feel so good. Especially hand knit cashmere socks. Oo la la.
The wonderful Fiona knit these for me from some of the HipKnits cashmere sock yarn that I dyed recently in the fruity colourway. They are a sample for Ally Pally but she made them the right size for me which was a brilliant idea because I love them and I want to wear them all the time. I'm so pleased with the way they have striped, I think they look amazing.

I can do anything
Sometimes I really believe that. I'm one of these people who makes decisions on the spur of the moment and takes for granted that I'll be able to do things that other people would consider to be mad. Example. I received a phone call yesterday morning to tell me that the 110 kilos of silk goods had cleared customs and was at the airport awaiting instructions. Would I like to arrange delivery?
Yes, but not at the amount they were going to charge to bring it over to me. I'll come and get it thanks. So off I head to the airport in my small car. (vauxhall corsa for those of you who are interested) I find the offices of the cargo agents, pay the money and collect a release note. Then I head into the cargo area of the airport and up to the servisair warehouse where I show them my piece of paper and the nice man on the forklift truck brings me out 2 GIANT jute sacks weighing 55 kilos each.
I sign for them, and he tips them onto the floor next to my car. Thank you very much. I haven't really thought this through have I? Do you think I remembered to take the pram out of the boot of my car? No. What about take out the car seat and leave that at home? No. OK. Lets work this out. Car seat and assorted toy junk into the front passengerseat. Backseat now clear. It looks as though they will both fit on the back seat, see I told you I could do this.
Now, how to lift a sack that weighs 55 kilos. Hmm. I really haven't thought this through have I? I was just about to start cutting open the sack with my car keys so that I could take the silk out and lift it in one kilo pack at a time when a kind courier man who had been watching my dilema walked over, picked up the sacks like they weighed as much as a bag of sugar and squashed them into the back of my car. Thanks!!
So then I took a slow drive home, pulled up outside the garage and looked into the back seat. Hmmm.... Now I really did have to cut open the bags and carry the silk into the garage one kilo at a time but that was OK. I knew I could do it!! I don't like to make things easy for myself do I?

Saturdays are for dyeing yarn
This week I decided that I'd spend a whole long day down the stables dyeing HipKnits yarn. In the end I arrived there at 5.30 am and left at 5.30 pm with a short lunch break around 3ish. (thanks for the lunch Jen!) Leigh asked for photos, I'll admit that I totally forgot to take any while we were dyeing but I managed to get a few..
Have you ever been into Tescos at 5am on a Saturday morning? Not only was I the only customer in the store but I got lots of funny looks because of what I was buying. I suppose that rubber gloves, vinegar, bin bags and big plastic tubs could be considered strange...
It was DARK down the stables at 5.30. I don't know who was more shocked, me or the horses! They cheered up when I gave them some breakfast though.. Anna arrived around 10.30 (much more civilised) and between us we managed to dye the following :
4 kilos of silk
2 kilos of cashmere sock yarn
1 kilo of merino sock yarn
3 kilos of super chunky wool
5 kilos of cotton
I'm not sure that she'll come back again, it was a lot of hard work.. I would have done lots more silk except that my shipment still isn't here. Sigh. Maybe tomorrow.
I didn't take many photos during the day, we were far too busy. Here is a little of the yarn while it was rinsing in buckets. Here are a few more of some silk,
more silk, a little more silk, some cashmere sock yarn and some cotton. Oh, and a little merino sock yarn. These pics probably show half of the yarn that we dyed. No wonder we were tired by the end of the day!

Backtack, Backtack
I signed up for BackTack 2, received my match and have been checking out their blog this morning. Very interesting. I've also arranged for them to be emailed so they should be hearing from me today. I love the idea of this, I already know what bag I'll be making for them but I have no idea about the kit. That's a more tricky one.....
Cameron loves Dora the Explorer at the moment. Whenever the theme tune comes on he dances around in little circles, clapping his hands and chanting "backpack, backpack" We were watching the video footage that we took when we were lost in the great maze the other week and at one point Brooke looked straight at the camera and said "if we were Dora then we would have a map and could get out of here" and from the lounge floor where we didn't realise he was paying any attention at all, Cameron jumped up and started chanting "backpack, backpack" So cute and so funny, bless him. So now whenever I think Backtack, I remember his funny little dancing to Dora and her backpack.
Still no silk :( It's been held up in customs since Wednesday while I wait for some government department to issue a PSEUDO TURN number. I'm not going to explain, its too boring for words. What it means is that my silk is sitting in an airport hanger incurring storage charges before it can get out of customs. The chances of me having it in time for dyeing day with Anna tomorrow are somewhere in the region of zero. I am so sad about that. Although it does mean that we can dye all of the cotton, wool, cashmere and merino that I have, we'll still only have around 3 kilos of silk to dye and that's just not fair.

New Knitty
Go see.
Edited to add - I'm going to make this and this for sure. Some of the other patterns are cute too, yay to Jen for getting her pattern in there. I saw a sneak peak of it a few weeks ago and knew it would be good.
More edits - I'm going to make Arisaig (how do you pronounce that?) out of some of the cashmere sock weight yarn that we're selling at HipKnits. Time to dye myself a nice plain colour for the main piece and something bright and variegated for the trim. Woo Hoo!

She still knits?
Are you sure?
Hmm. In the entire 2 weeks holiday I managed to make a small cotton baby shawl for mum's friend, (which I also forgot to photograph so just use your imagination) a chunky lace stitch scarf and about another inch of Kiri. (which you may remember I was going to wear to the christening on Sunday. Yeah right)
That's not very impressive at all is it?
Last night I cast on with some fyberspates dk wool in the Wild Foxglove colourway. Its beautiful stuff. I knitted for about an hour in front of the TV and at the end of it had exactly what I was hoping for. A rectangle knitted in 3 x 1 rib.
Perfect. I'm not going to explain now but all will become clear soon enough, I promise.
What else did I do last night? Well, I decided that it was about time I started sorting out the silk for Ally Pally. My aim is to take at least 40 kilos of hand dyed silk, 10 kilos of cashmere sock yarn, 5 kilos of merino sock yarn and I haven't worked out how much wool and cotton yet. This is my red silk bucket. There are about 6 kilos here all neatly wound up and labelled, so you can see I still have a way to go.
Anna is coming to help me dye lots of yarn at the weekend, I'm so excited about having someone to gossip to. Mum or Wayne usually help me but this time I get another knitter. Its a different kind of gossip! I just hope that the big silk order arrives this week, I'm kind of nervous as it is due to arrive today but I'm not sure how long it will take to clear customs..

Christening photos
Just a couple of quick photos from the christening. Here is the little man in his suit, before he had his hair done so he has a bit of a fluffy thing going on.
What do you buy for a 1 year old boy to wear for his christening? We went for linen trousers and a waistcoat from Monsoon. We wanted to get the white ones instead of navy but good sense prevailed when we realised that the navy ones were in the sale at 75% cheaper than the white ones. Navy is good, right?
The gorgeous cake made by his talented godmother. This allowed me to hide the cake that I had spent most of Saturday afternoon making. The 3d doves that I made for the top were called ducks one time too many for my liking and I suspect that even now Wayne and Brooke are planning to dye them yellow and write "quack" in speech bubbles coming out of their mouths. Cake decorating is NOT one of my strong points.

Totally relaxed and ready for the world again
We have had the most amazing two weeks holiday. Here's a roundup of some of the things we got up to, more details on the craft stuff later on this week.
One of the biggies to start with, our little man was christened yesterday. Love him. He was an angel all day, he was tired and by rights should have slept through the whole church service but he stayed awake until about 5 minutes after he was christened and then fell asleep on his Aunty Jenna.. We had lots of family and friends back to the house for a party afterwards which went on for the rest of the day and involved lots of food, drink and sun. Perfect.
Wayne and I celebrated our 2nd wedding anniversary last week.
Cameron learned to drink from a straw and eat corn from the cob. He also learned to spell his sister's name which involves him saying "B, B, B, B, B, B - Brooke" to any word that he sees written down.
We went to Bristol Zoo with Sue from Get Knitted, her husband and daughter. I think everyone had a great time, especially the kids. Its nice to be able to put 2 5 year old girls together and watch them play, I love the way kids make friends without seeming to think about it. I've been thinking a lot about frienships recently, maybe more on that later in the week when I've collected my thoughts a little.
2 trips to the seaside, where Cameron walked on the sand and went in the sea for the first time. I'm seriously considering buying a beach hut and going every weekend. We loved it!
Brooke got lost at the wildlife park. My heart stopped for the few minutes that it took to find her again and I didn't let go of her hand for the rest of the day.
We visited a local maze, spent an hour and a half trying to find our way out and made it! We have the certificate tio prove it.
The first monthly MagKnits went live. More to come at the end of each month.
Lots of yarn was dyed and sold for HipKnits More was ordered and will be arriving this week.
I hardly read any blogs or replied to any emails. I have a million emails to go through this week and will catch up with everyone's news at the same time.
Back to work work today, the train journey in was slow and long. Someone else was sitting in my seat which was a shock. Don't they know that on Mondays and Fridays, that seat on the first carriage of the 6am train is mine? Geez....
