Party!
Yesterday was my grandma's 80th birthday party. There were about 100 family members there for dinner at a nearby hotel. It was a great afternoon, lots of good food, good service and family members that we hadn't seen for years.
The next generation of Rycrofts (or whatever their surnames are now!) played nicely together, kids are so good at just mixing with others and getting on aren't they? I think that adults could learn some good lessons from the way children can just walk into a room full of total strangers and within minutes be playing chase with kids of totally different ages. Some good friendships were made by the end of the day.
A few pics, here is Brooke with a glass of wine in front of her and silk Kiri on the chair behind her. Anyone like go guess whose chair she was sitting in at the time?
Mum, dad and grandma while she cut her cake and made her speech. Finally, uncle Jim and grandma. Jim was "persuaded" to make the speech, as the Alpha Rycroft male he had no choice. Jim has also been the recipient of a couple of hand knitted hats, because he laughed at my knitting one time too many. Yes, I have been known to give handknitted presents as punishment sometimes!
Brooke is back from her half term adventure with various grandparents and we're back to school this morning. That means a little more chaos than usual so I'd better go wake them both up and start the day!
Oh yes, new MagKnits this afternoon and knitting pics tomorrow...
Edited - New Magknits is up. Go here or here. I'm off to get the kids from school and will fix the inevitible errors when I get back.

Friday roundup
I am so glad that it is Friday. This week has been a hard one and I'm ready for some good relaxing and socialising tomorrow and Sunday. The yarn for Brooke's hat / scarf is all spun and is drying today, I'm hoping to start that tonight and maybe even get it finished if I'm lucky. I also have a little project that I need to finish off tomorrow which I'll be able to show you next week, I've been knitting it on and off this week and I'm pleased with the way it came out. More on that next week..
I have 2 projects in mind for me and I don't know which one I should start first. I bought the kit for Fragrance from Kim Hargreaves in brown and it arrived yesterday. The chunky print is my kind of gauge and I can see myself getting a lot of wear out of that cardigan. I also have the yarn for Electra, the tank from the latest Rowan magazine which I'm itching to start. Felicia made one recently and it looks amazing. I'm not brave enough to knit in the round and steek though, I'll be knitting 2 flat pieces and seaming them..
So the big Friday question is which one should I make first? I'm hoping to start one of them on Monday so have a think about it over the weekend and let me know. I'm not capable of making any more decisions this week...

Finished shawl
Ta Da!

Funky shawl made from thick and thin handspun yarn from hello yarn. Ordered last Thursday and finished this Thursday morning while Cam watched "backpack" on TV. I used 12mm needles and just under 280 yards of yarn. It measures 60 inches across the top and 26 inches from top to bottom.Flat on the floor view. Close up. One more modelled view.
I decided not to fringe it so that I could use the remaining 150 yards to make a scarf for someone as a christmas gift. Please excuse the little black end sticking up at the top, I was so excited to wear it that I forgot about that one until I saw the pics, doh!

Handspun shawl
Its been an odd few days around here. With laptops breaking down, cars going wrong, wisdom teeth being extracted under sedation, Cameron staying away from Wayne and I for the first time ever, brakes failing on trains and various other bits, I'm so so ready for the weekend and its not even Thursday yet!
One bright spot in this week has been my Hello Yarn order. I fell in love with Adrian's super chunky hand spun yarn called Gala a couple of weeks ago when it was first on her site. After Ally Pally I decided to treat myself if it was still available and last Thursday I ordered all 3 skeins from her, total of around 450 yards. I asked her to wind it into centre pull balls if she had the time, she did - and it was posted out on Friday. Imagine how surprised I was when it arrived with me on Tuesday morning, I've known first class within the UK to take 3 days - not airmail! I have ordered a shawl kit that is being spun into yarn at the moment but Adrian kindly included the pattern with this batch of yarn.
Tuesday was a particularly bad day so I cast on immediately and have knitted up the first 180 yards already. I love it. I'm using 12mm needles and the fabric is so so soft. Its beautiful. I need to buy some circulars now as its outgrown the straight needles I started it on. Wouldn't it be nice to think I could be wearing it next week?

More handspun
This is the start of the yarn that I'm spinning for Brooke. She wants a hat like Cam's one. I want to make her a scarf. I'm sure we'll come to some sort of agreement and I'll end up making her a hat.
Doesn't it look like Brooke? Pink, purple, sparkly and shiny. There is about 80g of aran / chunky weight yarn here and I have about 30g of fibre still left to spin but there wasn't much room left on the spindle last night. I'd love to get the rest of it spun today so that I can start knitting it later on this week. PS - I didn't set the twist in the skein before I took the photos, that's why it looks so twisty!

Christmas knitting
How many of you are actually knitting christmas presents this year? I've decided to knit only a few for people who I know will appreciate them. I'll be making a couple of Sophies, some veggies, maybe a branching out scarf, possibly a Latifa or two, maybe a Cape May or something similar from one of the Rowan big books, and a couple of tank top type things. Oh, and probably a buttonhole bag or 2. I love that pattern so much!
The December issue of MagKnits is a kids themed issue. I'll be making one of the patterns from that for Brooke for Christmas, I'm so excited for the designer to get the pattern submitted so that I can cast on for it that I can't tell you! You've already seen some of the prototype on her blog, I love it...

Shopping....
I just put a few bits up on ebay. More to follow over the next couple of days. Post Ally Pally I've decided to stop dyeing the chunky wool yarn for HipKnits so I'm selling some undyed stuff and also the last few remaining bits of hand dyed.. Bargain prices. Go, see.
Edited to add :
Just in case anyone else is wondering why the 2 undyed yarn auctions for UK only, at over 2 kilos including packaging they are too heavy to be posted internationally. If I split them into 2 parcels to post to the US the total cost would have been around GBP30. That's USD50 ish. I thought that was too much money and also not the most sensible method of posting off an ebay auction... Sorry about that.
The hand dyed ones are all available worldwide though.

Cam Hat
I finished the handspun Cam Hat on the train yesterday morning and seamed it on the way home. I made a basic beanie and then wanted to add earflaps but wasn't sure if I'd have enough yarn. So, I unwound the little ball that was left and knitted both earflaps at the same time from each end of the yarn and had 5 inches left over when they were done and attached, how's that for thrifty?
"Flat" Cam hat
"Slightly crazy faced" Cam hat
"Goofy" Cam hat
"Climbing up mum to get to the camera" Cam hat
Do you know how hard it cam be to get a pic of a small boy who doesn't want to wear his hat? Maybe I'll put it on him while he sleeps tonight and snap some of him looking angelic in it. Wait, does he ever look angelic? I can't remember..
Do you want the pattern? It was super simple and something like this.
Cam Hat.
I used approx 80g of chunky weight wool.
Using 8mm needles, cast on 49 stitches and work 4 inches in stocking stitch ending with a purl row. Begin decreases on the next row, (Knit 5, Knit 2 together) repeat to end. Purl 1 row. Next knit row (Knit 4, Knit 2 together) reeat to end. Continue working each wrong side row in purl and decreasing on each right side row with 1 less stitch in between the Knit 2 togethers until you have Knit 3 together all the way along the row. Break yarn, thread through remaining stitches and seam hat.
Earflaps. Cast on 5 stitches and purl 1 row. Increase 1 stitch at each end of every knit row until you have 15 stitches. Cast off. Make another in the same way.
Attach earflaps to the hat in the required place. Attempt to put hat on your child and photograph for blog.
I cant remember the gauge or size of the hat but I'll measure it at the weekend and add the details here when I'm done.

Spinning again
I hadn't realised how much I missed spinning on my little drop spindle until I was packaging up the BackPack parcel a couple of days ago and got all motivated to spin up the fibre that I bought from AP. I bought 2 different batches, 4 x 20g of fibre in blues and browns for something for Cam and 4 x 20g of fibre in pinks and purples for something for Brooke. I also bought one of Nic's inspiration packs as well for Brooke's yarn. Its full of feathers, sequins and lovely sparkly pink things. She'll love it!
I picked up Cameron's fibre and started spinning. I like to pre draft the fibres into little piles and then just select the colours at random and pre draft some more as I'm spinning. I sat quite contented picking up different coloured piece of fibre until I had a nice big 40g skein all spun up. I had to stop at that point and pick the kids up from school and when that skein was dry I was too impatient to spin the rest of the yarn before knitting, so I started a Cam hat.
Looks cute doesn't it? I'm a big fan of blue and brown together, I think this is going to be a great winter hat. I've spun the rest of the yarn now and its drying as we speak so I'm hoping I can finish this in the next day or two. The weather is beginning to turn cold here so he may even be wearing it next week.
Brooke's fibre is destined to be a hat as well I think. I was planning a scarf but she already has a funky hand spun scarf so I think I'll do the hat thing for her as well. Hopefully with the extra bits from Nic's kit I can stretch her fibre out a little further to make a hat to fit her. Lets wait and see shall we?

Backpack, Backpack
We are still Dora obsessed in this house our whole routine at the moment seems to revolve around being at home for 5pm when Dora and Backpack are on. As soon as you say Dora in front of Cam he starts dancing around in circles and singing Backpack, backpack over and over again.
Hence, backtack 2 in this house is known as Backpack. How could it not be? I posted my parcel off today so that it should cross the Atlantic and arrive safe and sound with my pal in the US before the end of the month deadline. This is what I sent :
A very simple drawstring bag made in Amy Butler fabric. My backpack pal loves Amy Butler and my sewing skills are limited so I decided to go for simple and effective over complicated. My pal wants to learn to spin so I included a spindle, one of Heidi's spinning zines which is full of useful information, 3 little bags of fun stuff - some fiber, some cotton strands to use in spinning and a bag of sari silk thrums - all wrapped in another Amy Butler fat quarter.
Then as added treats, I made 3 little Amy Butler bags and filled them with merino and cashmere sock yarn and some cashmere laceweight. I wrapped up a skein of sari silk in some tissue paper and made a One Skein wonder kit out of some variegated silk and Stef's pattern.
I hope she likes all of that, I can't wait to see pics on her blog and I cannot wait to see what my Backpack pal sends to me. Woo Hoo..

Kiri
I knew I'd forget someone on my list of people I saw at ally pally. In fact, I'm sure I have forgotten lots more. Juju came over to say hi on one of the weekend days and I think I blurted out something very uncool although I can't remember what it was! Marie France came over to say hello and waited patiently for me while I explained the principles of making Clapotis and how much yarn it took for a full sized version in sign language. I also met Marie and after a bit of moving around we found a quietish corner for a Knitcast interview...
You may have noticed Kiri draped around the waist of Anna's dress form in the pictures above. I managed to finish her on the way to the show on Thursday, talk about leaving it until the last minute! I ended up using 220g of silk in 3 different colours and this is how she looks.
I like to wear shawls around my waist, I think this could be a good look for the silken Kiri. (and yes, that is my Nothing but a T shirt I'm wearing!) She also looks nice hanging on the bottom of the stairs, I'm really pleased with the way this came out and will definitely make more. I'm thinking cashmere sock yarn next time..

Ally Pally, the update
Wow.
That just about sums up how I feel about the whole Ally Pally experience. It was amazing, thank you so so much to everyone who came up to say hello and tell me that you read my blog. Thanks to everyone who came over and bought from us, existing HipKnits customers and brand new people who saw our silks and cashmeres for the first time at the show. We sold out of just about everything that we took, couldn't keep up with the demand for Sari silk and received many many whole sale orders.
Kristine and the other Debbie Bliss team were only a couple of stalls over from us, and they still owe us the calculator that the borrowed on day 1! When the kids came over Brooke fell in love with Kristine, I think it was because she bought her some butterflies that Brooke had been coveting, and Cameron had fun eating Debbie's phone (sorry about that!) and playing football in the aisles with some silk pom-poms.
Polly asked dad some good questions about knitting cashmere socks, thanks to all the other people who had been primed to turn up and ask him complicated questions! He did well to bluff his way though most of them apart from the ones that were so obviously staged that he didn't bother to try and be polite! He is still recovering from being referred to as a good looking older gentleman by Polly, he may never be the same again after 4 days surrounded by so many women!
Carolyn, Anita, Holly, Mary, Amelia, Jacinta, and many many other people came over to chat and shop. I met Erika Knight who is using some of our yarns at the moment, Debbie Abrahams so that I could thank her in person for the Tunis design she did for MagKnits, Jane Ellison, and had a lovely chat with some of the other ladies from Rowan. A huge thank you to everyone who made samples for me, especially to Helen for the amazing Cobweb shawl, it was a big big hit.
As much as I wanted to go and see what everyone else was selling I just didn't have the time. I chatted to Sue, Jeni and Carol on the get Knitted stand a couple of times and actually made it over to the Habu and Touch yarns stalls for a few minutes but didn't buy anything. In fact, I actually spent only £12 the whole time I was there, I'll show you some pics of that later in the week..
Here are a few more pics of the stand. Dad and I moved the stock around each day until on the last day we had it perfect. I hope he remembers how to do it for next year!

Gone Ally Pally
I'll be back on Monday hopefully with a hell of a lot less silk and cashmere than I have today. Dad and I went and set up this morning, we forgot a few things so we'll be there nice and early tomorrow with the last few bits to put out and up - I'm so excited!
If you're planning on coming shopping over the next few days make sure you come and say hi and tell me that you read here, OK? I'm looking forward to meeting lots of people that I've only ever emailed in the past, its going to be great...

New Knits on the Block
Look what arrived in the post this morning, my contributors copy of New Knits on the Block, by Vickie Howell.
I haven't had a chance to look through the whole book yet, I was just too excited by seeing my design in there (page 52 - the legwarmers and bag just in case you're interested) I'm right next to Jillian's design, I haven't looked at all the other contributors yet but you know there are bound to be a few other bloggers in there, right?
You can buy the book here at Amazon, if you want to.

Silken Kiri and no counting
Seriously, why did I start that whole tally thing on Saturday? Did I really think it would motivate me to keep going. I do not want to talk about how many skeins I have left to wind. OK? I just won't talk about it.
Instead, let me show you Kiri.
This is the detail of the colour change. I'm using 2 different colours of silk, they are both pale and pastel one is pinks and greens and the other is blues and greens, I love the way they look together.
I committed the cardinal sin of photographing the silk with the flash so excuse the poor photo quality. This is the crumpled, half way through the edging repeat shawl squashed onto one 6mm needle. I have to be so careful with it on the train now!

Silk Skeining tally
Silk skeining tally :
As of 4.30 Saturday
Done - 23
To do - 58
As of 9pm Saturday
Done - 28
To do - 53
Not much progress this afternoon, too much running around with birthday parties, cooking dinner and other housey type stuff. These were the last 81 skeins to do, the other hundreds are all done and packed up and ready to go. Oh, apart from the 50 or so that are still at mum and dad's. They are solids though so won't need any extra work. I'd like to get these remaining 53 out of the way by the end of Monday. What do you think?
As of 11pm Saturday -
done - 35
to do - 46
As of 8am Sunday
exactly the same. I'm out and about all day today getting the last few bits from IKEA that I need for Thursday. Marie France, as much as I would love to get them all done today I just dont think its possible. I'm going to aim for another 15 today to bump me up to 50. What do you think? The pressure is on...

That Friday feeling
The Friday feeling for me this week is busy and chaotic. I'm meeting Brooke (not my Brooke, silly!) this morning for coffee and plan making and Carolyn at lunchtime for pizza, gossip and silk. In the spirit of chaos and craziness, here are a few random pieces of information for you.
Someone sent this link about Innocent drinks knitting hats to put on top of their smoothie bottles to the UKHK yahoo group, I think it is old news as I remember them doing it a couple of years ago I think and I cant find a link to it on their site. Don't they look cute though?
Remember Kiri? Not this Kiri, but this one? I picked her up again yesterday morning as my train knitting and I'm steaming ahead. I'm up to repeat number 8 and think I'm going to stop at 9 or 10 as its growing quite large and heavy on the straight needles. I'm using 2 different shades of silk, and maybe a third one for the edging if I can find just the right shade in my vast garage full of silk. I forgot my camera this morning so you'll have to take my word for it, I should be able to get it finished over the weekend so I'll show you on Monday - hopefully.
I'm thinking of taking Brooke to some of the workshops or to see some films at the Barbican for the London's children's film festival in November. There isn't much information on the website at the moment but do any other London knitters and their children want to come and join us? Its from 10th to 20th November...
Finally, I had to leave work yesterday at lunchtime to dash home and pick up little Brooke who had a fight with a tree at lunchtime and lost. After a little while in hospital she was given the all clear and I took her (and her egg sized bruising lump on her forehead) home and tucked them up on the sofa with a duvet. She is staying home from school with Wayne today and seems totally normal. The fact that she couldn't have her friend home after school to play as planned seemed to upset her more than the bump!
This weekend, last minute Ally Pally shopping. IKEA, Argos and fabric store in Finchley. Oh yes, and last minute labelling and winding into hanks the last 10 kilos of silk. Yes, I have been procrastinating over doing that all week. Sigh. Here's to an equally crazy weekend!
PS - I'm trying to work out what I typed to get THOSE adverts on the left? Huh? I thought that they were content related but unless I've been sleep-blogging I don't remember writing about such things.. Confusion on a Friday morning, its not good.

Louisa Harding yarns
Has anyone else tried the new Louisa Harding yarns? I was tempted by a skein of the kimono angora and the sari ribbon when I was in JL last week. After some confusion with the ball band instructions for needle sizes (I can't remember the last time I had to go to the design consultant for advice on yarn, usually I just buy it and get on with it) I wound the sari silk ribbon into a ball and started knitting.
I can't remember what shades I got but they are both pinkish tones. At first when I picked up the kimono angora and looked at the price I was pleasantly surprised to notice that it was under GBP4. Then I realised this was for 25g which I didn't think was quite so reasonable. Still, I bought a ball to play with and the texture is so so soft it almost made me forget the price. I have no idea what I'm going to do with 1 ball of each, I'm thinking maybe some kind of skinny drop stitch scarf?
Ally Pally prep is going well. Pretty much the only thing I have to do now is wind and label the last 10 kilos of silk yarn. I expect that will take me a good few hours but I plan to get it all done by the weekend. I want to be able to spend Mon / Tues / Wed next week sitting down in front of the TV relaxing instead of putting together kits, labelling yarn and printing out patterns. Yeah right, I'm not sure I even know how to sit in front of the TV and relax unless I have some knitting needles in my hands.
Thanks for all the walking to school comments, they have just started a walking bus but Wayne and I both decided that at only just 5 she is a little too young to go on it. I like the idea of sharing the walking with other people, I must get better at suggesting things like that to the other mums and lose this last bit of playground shyness that still hangs over me every day.
Random knitting fact. Do you know how to break the glass in a double glazed window if you need to get out in a hurry for some reason? I was on a HSSE training course with work last week and we learned (not through any practical experiment though!) that throwing a heavy object at the glass will not break double glazing, instead you need to hit the bottom left hand corner of the window very hard with something sharp and pointed. Like a knitting needle I called out without thinking. Yes, like a knitting needle the instructor agreed before all the other guys in the room looked at me strangely and we moved on to the next subject. Whoops, do you think I just gave too much of myself away to the people I work with? Hee hee hee.

Walk to school week
Did you know its National Walk to School Week here in the UK? Well, it is. Now, while I totally agree that it is good practice for parents to walk their children to school, for us it is just not possible. We live about 1/2 mile from Brooke's school. That's well within walking distance. Cameron's nursery is about 3 miles the other side of her school on the edge of the village. That's not walkable. Especially when Wayne and I both work full time so we're on a mission in the mornings to get the kids dropped off and back to our desks nice and early. I have 9.30 conference calls most days that I need to be available for.
Our morning routine is to get in the car, drive to Brooke's school and drop her off then drive straight round to nursery, drop Cam off and then back to work. If we walk Brooke to school and then come back to get the car to take Cameron that adds about 15 minutes to the journey which means that I dont get back in time for my 9.30.
Brooke is OK with being taken in by car most of the time although she would love to walk. However this week, its a little harder. The children are getting stickers and prizes if they walk into school. They are being given activity sheets to fill in every day about what they saw on the way in to school and what the weather was like. Brooke is desperate to be part of it and get a sticker, draw in her walk to school workbook - it makes it really hard for us.
This morning I walked into school with her, came back and then dropped Cam off. This means I'm late but she is happy. What else can I do? I think the school are doing a good thing in trying to promote good health by walking or cycling to school but they don't understand that for us its just not possible. Sigh. It is also harvest festival today which means that all the children had to take in a bag of rice, pasta or plain flour to school in a carrier bag. So that's swimming kit, book bag, water bottle, flour, Cameron, my handbag and Brooke. I think I'd be the one keeping fitter if I walked in every day!

Trains, no planes and no automobiles
Aaah, so after a few technical problems on Friday morning and a few "not at home in front of my laptop" problems (if you can call them that!) on Saturday I finally got the new MagKnits up and running on Saturday evening. All of the pattern submissions are in for the October issue so Alexandra is busy tech editing those while I finish off the archive pages. It's all good.
Cam on the train.
The other Friday I took Cameron into London with me on the train. Its around a 45 minute journey and I was a little nervous about how he would react to sitting in one place for that amount of time but he was great. He ate his snacks that I bought for him, pushed his train around the table, looked out of the window and shouted woof woof to the cows, sheep and horses that we saw (as far as Cameron is concerned all birds say quack and all animals say woof!) and flirted shamelessly with the women sitting opposite us! All in all it was one of the most fun train journeys into work that I can remember. Not that much knitting was done though but that was OK.
I love knitting on the train. People do look at me like I am totally mad but hey, I'm used to it. However, when I'm making up fingerpuppet and flower kits, that's a different story. Not only do they look at me as if I am mad they actually leave the seat next to me empty! This morning I had 4 x 100g skeins of yarn rolled up into balls and I spent the journey with my book propped open on the table so that I could read while I made up mini 10g skeins of yarn. I'll admit it must have looked odd but I do still have a few bits to get read for Ally Pally and why should I waste that 1.5 hours train time on the days that I go into the office?
Talking of Ally Pally did you know its only just over a week away? Scary but true...
