A peep inside HipKnits

Brooke and I were over at the shop this morning, finishing up a few wholesale orders and packing some parcels to take to the post office. I thought I'd take a few pics of the work room and show you what I've been up to this week.

wallone.jpg

On the bottom drying rail on this wall we have some shawl kits, a little black and cream cashmere sock yarn for Anna and some pinks and oranges cashmere sock yarn for the shop. Just peeking in the picture on the top rail is some wool sock yarn and a couple of skeins of silk leftover from last weekend's dyeing course. The rule of the hanging rails is that when they first come out of the dyeing process they hang on the bottom, drip away into buckets until they are pretty much dry and then they move to the top rail to finish off. From the top rail they are labelled, wrapped and put on the shelves or packed and posted if for a wholesale order.

I have 2 lots of double drying rails. All 4 rails are full at the moment and I also have yarn drying on a little portable clothes airer. Oh, and some lying on a towel on the work surface. This is the other wall, with Brooke insisting on being in the photo. Along the top are some more cashmere sock yarns for the site next month and the bottom rail is a wholesale order due out this week.

wall2.jpg

This is my most lovely skein winder. Ask Jeni, she'll tell you that it rocks. It used to take me about an hour to wind 10 skeins from cones by hand. Now it takes about 10 minutes to do the same. I cannot begin to tell you how much I love this machine. It may be big, heavy and ugly but it is the best money I have ever spent bar none.

winder.jpg

Finally a couple of pics of some yarn that I dyed for another wholesale order. This is some merino / nylon sock yarn in bouquet and Oceanic. I experimented with a new dyeing technique for these and it worked really well I think. I must dye some more for me this week!

Other exciting news for me, I'm ready to ship my first ever wholesale order to the US. How cool is that? It will be leaving my house on Tuesday so should be arriving and up on the website in a week or so. I'll link to the shop when its up and for sale on their. HipKnits are getting international!

Beaded knits

I've never knit with beads before, but when I saw the beaded bracelets that Emma and Anita had both made I knew I had to give it a go. My first effort was knitted on needles that were too large so I'm not showing you that one, need to unpick it and knit it again. It was a beautiful bracelet done in pale pinks and brown with some deep cheery thrown in for good measure. My second effort was this one that was given to mum for her birthday yesterday :

beadbracelet.jpg

Mums bracelet, my wrist

I know I said that we were going to see her on Saturday and we are, the kids and I just decided to surprise her on her birthday so we popped into her office just before she was about to finish with flowers and cakes and dinner and then ruined her birthday plans for a nice quiet evening in on her own and spread toys all over her whole house instead! Seems only fair don't you think?

I can see many more beaded knits in my future, in fact I've just agreed to teach some beaded knitting classes at the knitting show at the NEC in September. Woo Hoo!

Shawls and stuff

You guys are so sweet, thanks for all the Cam comments yesterday. I decided that I wasn't going to write about it until we knew that he was all OK, it was a horrible thing for him to have to go through but at least you all know about irritable hip now so that's a good thing I guess!

Onto more cheerful things, its my mum's birthday today - happy birthday mum! We're going over at the weekend for a BBQ so lets hope the weather stays nice for us.

In HipKnits news things are going really really well. The cashmere club is nearly sold out, the deadline for that is this Sunday so if you've been procrastinating about joining you'd better be quick. I also caved under the pressure and started a silk club as well, that is filling up nicely too. We've had HUNDREDS of requests for competition entries as well which is lovely. Again, the deadline is the end of the month to request a pack so that I can then go and start putting them all together.

I've also been ordering lots and lots of new yarns to dye which is maybe a little bit naughty but lots of fun as well. I have yarn on the way from 4 companies, 2.5 of the orders are for me to dye and the other 1.5 orders are ready to sell. I'm so excited about the ready to sell yarns but I made myself promise that I wouldn't tell about them until they were ready to go. They should all be here in time to go on the site for the early June big update.

I started one version of the shawl knitted with lots of different textured yarns all dyed in the same pot (must think of a shorter name for that!) at knitting group on Tuesday, what do you think?

shawlswatch.jpg

I'm loving the texture and the colours and the way the different yarns are knitting up. On 7mm needles it only took me a couple of hours to get a nice big decent sized piece knitted, I think this would be a 2 or 3 evenings shawl. I'm hoping to get the kits ready for early June on the site, the idea is that you'll buy around 400g of different yarns all dyed in the same pot and get a pattern for 3 shawls and maybe various scarves with it. What do you reckon?

Irritable Hip

Easter Saturday we were staying at mum and dad's house with the children, Cameron had a stinking cold and a cough but apart from that he was OK - running around the house and playing football in the garden with grandad. He went to sleep in the car on the way to my gran's house and woke up miserable and clingy. It took a little while before we realised that he wasn't just clingy because he was grumpy, he couldn't actually stand up. When we tried to put him down he would just stand on his left leg with his right leg hanging there and say "stuck" over and over again.

We took him back to mum and dads and when the same thing happened we called their doctors emergency service who said to bring him in to their clinic at the local hospital. We took him straight in and the doctor took one look at him hobbling around on one leg and asked us to take him up to the children's ward.

Cutting a long story short, we were advised that the most likely cause was a virus in his hip, other options were a bacterial infection which needed to be ruled out by blood tests or sickle cell - the thought of which reduced both Wayne and I to terrified silence. Because of his cold (and hatred of doctors and hospitals), his temperature and heart rate were high and his oxygen levels were low. Three doctors together with Wayne and I had to hold him to get the drip put in his hand and to take blood to be tested. One doctor kept remarking how strong he was as he pulled away from them time and time again. It wasn't painful for him as he had numbing cream on his hands for an hour but he just hated being held still.

The nurses in the hospital were great. They bought him some dinner even before he had seen the doctor. As it was Easter they had chocolate eggs for all the children, even those like Cam who we didn't know whether they were staying or going home.

Wayne and I spent a horrible time sitting by the side of his cot in the dark, listening to all the other children and their parents, the nurses and doctors. There wasn't really much to say so we just sat there, dozing in and out of sleep and listening to Cam snore in his cot.

We were so grateful to eventually get the test results back and learn that it was just a viral infection, something which they called irritable hip syndrome. Apparantly it is fairly common in young children, that following a cold the virus goes to their hips and means that they can't bear weight for a period of time. We bought him home under the instructions to rest him for 10 days (have you ever tried to get an active 20 month old boy to rest without just leaving him in his cot all day?!) and we took him back to clinic at the hospital yesterday for a check up.

He has been getting better and better over the last week and they told us yesterday that they don't need to see him again, the virus seems to have cleared up by itself as they thought it would. How scary though? We had never heard of irritable hip but you can imagine I googled it as soon as we got home, the very first page coming up being this one from the NHS. Talking to some of the other mum's in the playground last week with Cameron firmly strapped into his pushchair and fuming that he couldn't run around with the other children as normal, I discovered one other parent who had experienced the same thing with her 4 year old. For something so common I was mildly surprised that I had never heard of it before.

So, I'm enjoying working from home this week without a sick little person here with me. Poor little chap, his last bad virus turned into pneumonia and this one into irritable hip. I think its time to wrap him up in cotton wool and not let him out for a while, don't you?

Weekend of goodness

We had a lovely weekend here, Jeni came over for the day on Saturday. She bought some of her big cones of yarn and we had fun at the shop playing with my amazing magic skein winder. We also had lots of time to gossip and hatch some plans, we are planning on taking over the world and should be able to do so very shortly. Cameron was a bit unsure at first but by mid afternoon when we were sitting out in the garden in the sun pouring over some sample books and deciding what kind of orders to place he had changed his mind and kept dragging Jeni off to play on the slide with him. My sister turned up a little while later and he decided that Jeni and Jenna were too close together so he just called them both Nena.

Sunday morning, Jeni and I went back to the shop for more skein winding and a bit of tidying up. Then at 10 the first HipKnits yarn dyeing course started, we had such a good day! Everyone dyed 3 skeins of yarn, 1 using fiber reactive dyes, 1 using acid dyes and then 1 using Kool Aid. I had forgot to take my camera but Lisa had her's with her so pics of all the gorgeous skeins of yarn will be on the HipKnits site shortly. I'm trying to work out a date for the next dyeing course now, it went much better than I could have hoped for.

Oh yes, and West Ham are through to the final of the FA cup which made having a house full of women talking about knitting all weekend bearable as far as Wayne is concerned!

News to share

This is an email I just sent out to the MagKnits designers list and a few other people. I thought I'd share it with you in case anyone else is interested in submitting some ideas.

I am currently working with a publisher on putting together a hand painted yarns book, and we are at the stage of planning the designs for the book. This is where you all come in, the publisher is very keen to tap the talent of as many of our talented MagKnits designers as possible and has asked that I collect ideas and submissions from you all.

The idea of the book is to show people how to use hand painted yarns to produce gorgeous individual garments that really show the yarn off at their best. We are looking for innovative designs that use the very essence of hand painted yarns at their core, think Koigu, Lornas Laces and other beautifully dyed yarns. How could you show the colours at their best? What kind of texture, stitch, shape do you think works best with hand painted yarns? How do you feel about pooling, striping? What techniques could you use to avoid this or do you prefer to use it to your advantage and show off the striping / pooling in some way? We are looking for clean, modern designs with classic shapes that will inspire people to pick up some skeins of hand painted yarn and make something beautiful without feeling as though they don't know how.

We are particularly looking for garments, either for adults or children. I am sure that there will be room for some accessories or smaller pieces but please concentrate on the larger projects for now. The purpose of the book is to encourage people to not be afraid of hand dyed yarns, to understand their beauty and individuality and how that can be used to make exclusive garments.

Interested in being part of this new and exciting project? Read on….

The deadline for ideas to be submitted is 7th May which gives you just over 2 weeks. I know that is not long but I would love to see what you can all come up with. Feel free to submit as many ideas as you like, please send each one as a separate document in the email so that it is easy for me to distinguish between them.

For each idea I need the following copied and pasted into one document :

- Photo of swatch. This does not have to be in the yarn that you want to use for the product but must clearly show the effect that you are going for. For instance if your design is for an intricate lace or cable pattern, please do not send us pictures of a stocking stitch swatch. I want to see what you have planned for the yarn, I need to be able to imagine how it is going to look in the garment that you are designing
- description of design, (sweater, cardigan etc)
- suggested yarn,
- techniques used,
- sketch (hand drawn is fine) or photo / scan of something similar that exists out there

Do let me know if you have any questions, otherwise get out there and get creative!

Lucky in the post

Apart from the fact that the courier turned up half an hour late with my big yarn order yesterday, I've had some really lucky post days this week. (it wasn't all bad, I refused to pay the additional premium they'd charged me for a pre 10am delivery. Quick phone call to head office and lucky for them they were reasonable about the whole thing.)

First was this beautiful little collage from Alicia, isn't it just gorgeous? I love the attention to detail and the way she has made this, it is so so pretty. It now has pride of place on the wall of the shop, right in the middle of a bunch of handpainted rovings. I think it will be happy there. Thanks so much Alicia! xx

aliciagift.jpg

Next up was a parcel full of goodies from the lovely Michaela. She sent a DVD for Brooke and a Truck book for poor little Cam which he has fallen in love with. Its kept us both sane the last day or so. There were also some goodies for me in there, look :

michaelacupcake.jpg

A knitted cupcake paperweight! How cute. I have been working on some cupcake patterns and kits recently so this couldn't have come at a better time for some added inspiration. Do you think it look good enough to eat? Unfortunately for me and the cupcake it now lives in the kids playroom in their shopping trolley. I plan to sneak it back onto the desk when they are sleeping tonight and hope they never notice.

michaelaflower.jpg

Then there was a beautiful laceweight silk flower. I think that this is the one she cast on at the HipKnits open day, isn't it sweet? Michaela is the queen of flower knitting, she designed the flowers that we sell in the flower kits at HipKnits and also the ones that I used to teach the classes with at Olympia. I will be putting a pin on the back of this one and wearing it as a brooch, I promise you that.

200 kilos of yarn in my hall, 200 kilos of yarn

Well, there isn't actually 200 kilos of yarn in my hall right now, but there will be within the next 2 hours. The next batch of silk passed customs clearance yesterday and is on a truck, guaranteed to arrive with me before 10am. We hope. I don't have a lot of faith in delivery times but I'm always happy to be proven wrong. Cam is home this week so that means that the school run is much quicker as Brooke's school is very close to home but don't you just know that the delivery will arrive in the 10 minutes that I'm out of the house? I think I'll either leave a note on the door or try and see if my neighbour is awake to watchout for him. I'd be gutted if I missed it..

I've started the front of Reid, still haven't heard back from the designer about the questions I had although I did read a response to a question on her blog where someone had asked why the schematics and the measurements didn't add up and she just said that it may look strange but it works. Hum. I think I'll keep going with my own measurements for the time being.

Reid is a beautiful knit but it is one that needs to be concentrated on just a little bit. That means that I need to have something else to work on for my cooking dinner knitting, my chatting to Wayne knitting and my on the sofa watching TV knitting. So I started this :

silkknitting.jpg

I have lots of odd balls of silk left over and to be honest, single skeins of silk don't sell all that well. So I've been balling them all up and working on some small projects that can be made with just 1 skein of silk. Some of them will be going into a little leaflet and others will be offered on HipKnits, some free and some for sale. I started this one at knitting night on Tuesday and Laura will be able to tell you that I changed my mind half a dozen times about what it was going to be. I love doing that! I'm never happier than when I'm totally making something up as I go along. I love the feeling of suddenly knowing what something is going to turn into. Its like magic! I think I know what I'm planning now and its such a lovely nice quick knit it may even be done by the weekend. How's that for speedy needles?

New Yarns

I've been dyeing some new yarns for HipKnits recently, I haven't got enough to have them on the site yet but I will do very soon.

Blue Faced Leicester and Alpaca Blend :

Merino :

Mohair :

blogmohair.jpg

Kid Mohair :

blogkid mohair.jpg

These were all dyed in the same pot using the same colours of dye. I'm intrigued by the way that they all take the colours differently and come out looking similar but not the same. Beautiful..

In other new news I'm in Backtack 3, so excited to go and begin my softie. I'm not sure whether to use one of the recommended patterns or to stick to what I know best and knit one.

PS - Alice, no - we didn't see the bubble show. Next time..

Science Museum

We took the kids to the science museum on Thursday. The original plan was to drive into Kensington but heavy traffic forced us onto the tube at Bounds green instead. This is the first time Cam and Brooke have been on the tube together and they had a great time, see?

sciencemuseum.jpg

We must be one of the few couples who would venture into central London with a 20 month old and no pushchair. Cam did a great job walking around all day holding hands with either Brooke or Wayne and I. When he got tired after lunch we took it in turns to carry him and a few minutes after I picked him up he said "baby, baby" which means that he wants you to hold him horizontally like a baby and he promptly fell asleep. So I let Wayne and Brooke carry on looking at that floor and I went and sat on a bench with Cameron sprawled over me and knitted for an hour. Nice and relaxing for all of us.

The return journey wasn't so great. We hit the beginning of rush hour on the tubes and ended up with each one of us carrying a sleeping kid with bags as well. The tube that we were on was pretty full and it terminated unexpectedly so we had to get off and wait for the next one. Having not lived in London for nearly 2 years I'd forgotten all about the joys of tube travel.

Reid

Sigh. You know sometimes things don't go exactly as you hoped they would? That just about sums up this weekend. Without going into all the non knitting stuff that's happening let me talk to you about Reid. I was hoping for a nice straightforward knit here, I rarely knit a pattern as written but with all the designing and other messing about I'm doing with my knitting at the moment it was going to make a nice change to just cast on and follow someone elses instructions.

So I cast on for the back last week and after having to rip it out about 9 times I finally got into the lace pattern and mindlessly knitted away until the back was done. I'm using Araucania Atacama which is a hand dyed alpaca yarn that we're stocking in the shop. I am in love with everything about it, the colours, the texture and the way it knits up. Beautiful.

It was only when I had cast off the back and blocked it to see how it looked that I realised that it was huge. Not just a little too big but HUGE. I had actually swatched for this as well and I was just about on gauge so hadn't expected to see such a big piece of back for a 6 year old's cardigan. So I went back to the pattern to see where I had gone wrong.

The chest measurement given for the age 6 size is 26 inches. OK, that sounds about right for a 6 year old. I tend to use the Marks and Spencers sizes when designing and they give a slightly smaller measurement but I can handle a couple of inches ease. However, at a gauge of 22 stitches to 10cm, casting on 113 stitches for the back gives a finished measurement of 20.5 inches. That can't be right. A quick look at the pattern for the front shows that you cast on around half the number of stitches for the 2 fronts which would make the total chest size 41 inches. There is no schematic for the front of the cardigan but the back of the cardigan shows 19 inches for the largest size which doesn't tie up with either the gauge as written in the pattern or the chest measurement.

Confused? Yes. I emailed Brooke the designer (not Brooke my daughter) and I hope she'll be able to clarify for me. In the meantime this is the back of Reid mark 2.

reidback.jpg

I totally adjusted the number of stitches I cast on to give me the width I needed. I'm planning to divide by 2 for the front and then hope I can work out the maths for the sleeves by then. Isn't it gorgeous? Despite having to rip it out more times than is healthy I still love it and can't wait to see my Brooke wearing it in a couple of weeks time, with or without sleeves!

Kool aid dyeing - part 1

brookedyedyarn.jpg

These are the first few yarns that Brooke dyed with Koolaid last weekend. Pretty good aren't they?

She has done a few more but they are not dry yet. I'll have to get pics of those at the weekend. I'm thinking about knitting her something with one of them as a keepsake, she's not really up to knitting herself anything with them yet although she did manage a couple of rows at the HipKnits knitting night last night.

We had 7 people turn up, it was a lovely evening. Brooke came along as well and kept Shirley and Julia entertained dyeing yarn in the back room while the rest of us knitted and gossiped. I had every intention of starting Reid from the latest Knitty but having knitted and ripped out the first row 4 times I gave up and picked up a little project I'm working on for Silkwood yarns instead.

kerriesilkwood.jpg

See, much more gratifying and much easier to deal with while talking and keeping half an eye on Brooke at the same time. I will crack on with Reid though...

Dear Internet,

Hello, are you waiting for an email from mummy? I thought I'd better let you know that she might not be able to email you for a while and if she does manage to email you then her spelling and grammer might be a little odd. She would tell you that its because I like to sit on her like this while she is on her laptop :

camblog.jpg

But I think its because she likes to cuddle me instead of sending emails. See how she has one hand hand cuddling my tummy while I'm sitting on the one that she is trying to type with? She would tell you that she is just holding me still so that I don't jump all over her laptop but I'm not sure about that. Either way, she says she can't send emails when I do this and that means she is more likely to come and play football with me so I think that not being able to send emails has to be a good thing. Don't you?

love from Cam.

Which would you choose? Emails or football with this guy?

A spoon full of sugar

This is the sugar :

bagbagbag.jpg

How cool is that? I am totally in love with this bag. If it were possible to marry a bag and have its babies I would be filing divorce papers on Wayne even as I type. This bag is gorgeous. I'm not the only one who thinks so, Jillian just reviewed it over at Knitty as well. See? If Jillian and I both love it then it has to be right. Us Geminis know what we are talking about and you know what? I love, love, love it. Can you tell I'm happy with the bag? Yes, the annoying way it falls over when empty is a little annoying but who cares about that? I managed to fit my laptop in it as well as my knitting, book, notepad and pencil case and various other junk that I like to carry around with me. Perfect I tell you. If you get the chance to buy one or be gifted with one, my advice is to go for it. Mine came from Get Knitted.

Now for the medicine that the spoon full of sugar was supposed to help with. Its time to talk copyright again. You know when you're looking around on a website like MagKnits, Knitty, Rowan or any one of the millions of other knitting related sites out there and you see a picture of something that is exactly what you're looking for and you want to share it with the whole internet by blogging about it? Well, most of these sites will have their photos protected by copyright. That means that you shouldn't right click on them, save them to your own server and then post them on your blog. Technically you are stealing that person's image.

Now, when new MagKnits issues come out I see this happening a lot. I see lots of blog entries that are kind of like this one from Sauniell, only this one is totally allowed as it is her pattern, her design and her photo that she is posting on her site. I used this as an example because I dont want to pick on anyone else who did something similar with this or any other MagKnits image. Technically, if it is not your pattern and your photo then you shouldn't be doing this. However, I and most of the MagKnits designers, will turn a blind eye when this happens every now and again on blogs where people are blogging that they love the design and they provide a link back to the MagKnits pattern and the designer's site.

However, every now and again I will ask someone to take down the picture. Especially if it has been taken and used in a way that is not complimentary or flattering to the designer or MagKnits. Why would I let that happen? Its one thing to break copyright rules if you have lots of good things to say about the pattern (although technically this is still the wrong way to go about it, you should really just link to the page that the design is on and not include the picture in your post) but quite another to break copyright rules in a mean spirited fashion.

So remember, before you right click and save that picture to your own web server think about whether the person who published that photo would mind you using it in that way. If in doubt, I'd always email them and ask. That way you won't risk offending anyone by mistake.

Day 1 of 3

It occured to me last night as Wayne and I were in front of the TV watching our usual Sunday night fix of ER that I haven't actually knitted anything since finishing the cashmere cardi. (I also haven't done any more with the cardigan, its still sitting folded up on my desk. Must get around to that!) I feel like I have so much to do but I just haven't been able to motivate myself to pick up the needles and start anything.

The shop open day on Saturday went well. It was less manic than the first open day but there was a steady stream of people in and out of the shop all day and only 1 person came in and left without buying which is always nice to see. Brooke came along with dad and I for the whole day and I really thought that she would get bored as we were there from 9.30 until 4.30 but she was a star. Something to do with me teaching her how to dye yarn with Koolaid I think. She used up nearly half of the stock I had left from Olympia (mental note to self, buy more Koolaid this week) and played really nicely. I now have half a dozen Brooke dyed skeins of sock yarn drying in the shop. I'm not too sure what to do with them, whether to sell them on HipKnits or maybe here? I'm not sure I want to keep all of them to knit with although they are really nice colours..

I updated HipKnits this morning, lots of fun stuff on the sale page and Annarella's stitch markers are back up again. There will be some new exciting HipKnits news towards the end of the week, depending on whether I get the knitting bug back again this week or spend the time updating web pages instead.

New Knitty is out this morning. I'm in love with Reid. Expect to see my Brooke wearing one very, very soon. I've taken Thursday off work this week so its a 3 day week for me before the Easter weekend. I cannot wait for a few days at home with Wayne and the kids, just chilling out. Maybe I'll find the time to start Reid over the weekend, what do you think?

Oh, and I started reading The Faraway Tree stories to Brooke over the weekend and she LOVED it. I couldn't stop the first night and we read about the first 6 chapters, it was beautiful. I went straight downstairs and watched The Chronicles of Narnia on DVD which was equally brilliant so I had a real return to my childhood few hours..

PS - have you seen the new Loop Online store? It looks gorgeous, doesn't it?

Magical Reading

Brooke is really really good at reading. She has moved on and on with the books she brings home from school and is now allowed to choose any book she likes from school or home to have as her daily reading book. Her teacher recently tested her with a test that is used on children in the year above her and she scored 98% and was described as exceptional. This makes me so happy as I've always loved reading and books and I think that a love of reading and a respect for books is a really valuable thing to have. Boasting about Brooke over now, at least for a while!

Our bedtime routine is changing with the kids. Wayne and I always said that the one thing we'd do differently with any children after Brooke was teach them to put themselves to bed. With Brooke we always either fed her to sleep when she was little or stayed in bed with her until she was asleep when she was older. It took us years to get her to go to sleep on her own which wasn't a major problem but it would have been nice to have the option to just tuck her in and leave her to nod off on her own a little earlier. However, here we are with Cameron coming up to 2 years old and we still stay with him at night while he drinks his milk and goes to sleep. Whoops!

We are trying though. I tend to be firmer than Wayne with things like this. When I put Cam to bed I'll give him a kiss and tuck him in his cot with his bottle and then stay for a couple of minutes before saying goodnight and sneaking out of the room. With Brookie, I listen to her say her prayers, give her a quick hug and leave her. I think we're making tracks to soon give Cam the skills to put himself to sleep in the evenings. Child number 3 will definitley learn this at a much earlier age. Mum, if you just read that and fell off your chair don't worry, its still just pipe dreams!

Brooke has been asking me to read to her more and more recently. She reads to me every night as part of her school homework and I decided that a nice bedtime routine for all of us would be for me to read a chapter of a book to Brooke (and Cam if he is interested) before tucking them into bed. So I had a little think about the kind of book I'd like to read, she is too young for the fab Harry Potter I think, and remembered my love of Enid Blyton books when I was little. Onto Amazon and I bought my childhood favourites, the Folks of the Faraway Tree.

I was slightly annoyed to find that the "buy these 2 books for a reduced price" offer that Amazon suggested led me to buy The Folks of the Faraway Tree and also The Faraway Tree stories which is a 3 in 1 book, 1 of those stories being The Folks of the Faraway Tree. Not cool, Amazon. Not cool.

I'm so excited about being able to read these to Brooke at nights, I almost want to start them myself now but I'll wait until tonight. Oh, and as I have duplicate books in my hands the first person to email me at KerrieATmagknitsDOTcom can have the single book. Its magical reading for kids, I promise!

Getting there

Thanks to all your good wishes my hand has co-operated enough to let me finish the last 20 or so rows on the cashmere cardi. See?

Now all I have to do is to find the strength somewhere to block, seam and finish it. That is so not my favourite part of knitting!

Injured

Nothing interesting from me today, I managed to hit the base of my thumb on the corner of the bannisters last night when taking Cam up for a bath. It is swollen, bruised and my right hand is pretty useless now. I can't knit. It hurts to type. Feeling very sorry for myself. Hopefully a day of pretty much resting it will help. I'm typing this one handed which is harder for me than anything, I'm a bit of a speed typist. Send me good vibes, OK?

The cashmere cardigan is just about done. I have finished the first piece of the front and I'm up to the raglan shaping on the second. Woo Hoo. Depending on how long it takes me to get it blocked and seamed you may even see me wearing it this week.

Other knitting, I've just finished up a new design that I've test knit in a few different sizes. The lovely Minxxy is going to knit me some samples for HipKnits in some other women's designs of mine and I'm sitting down tonight with lots and lots of sari silk ready to work up a few patterns for a little booklet I'm putting together. Its all good fun you know.

Saturday in spring

What a gorgeous day it is over here? Its nearly lunchtime and already we've been really busy this morning.

The new MagKnits went live at about 8.30 this morning, I hope you like it. I feel a bit like a mum picking favourites with her children but the zombie wristwarmers have a special place in my heart. I asked Wayne if he'd wear them and received an emphatic NO but I still think I'll make a few.

Then after MagKnits was published, Brooke and I headed over to the shop to dye some yarn and welcome the lovely Shirley - a local lady who is going to be opening the shop for me every Saturday! She rocks. We left her happily (or maybe not) winding and labelling a big box of sari silk.

Home to pick up the boys and we walked over to the once a month village farmers market where we picked up home made sausage rolls, cookies, apple pie and scones from the WI, local made sausages and free range eggs. The park is just behind the village hall so we stopped off there for an hour of football and climbing frames before getting home a few minutes ago.

Now its time for lunch (of sausage, eggs and other Farmers Market goodies) followed by a nap for Mr C (and me?) and then popping back over to the shop tomake sure Shirley is OK and then take lots of pics so that I can get HipKnits updated tomorrow.

I should have mentioned that Flightpath is the Jodie Foster film. Wayne and I took bets on whether she was right or a total nutter and I have to admit that I was wrong. I really enjoyed the film and finished off the back of the cashmere cardigan while watching it. The first front of the cardigan has now been cast on and depending what the film on Sky tonight is I'm hoping to make some good progress.

Back on Monday with a big HipKnits update and some weekendly photos!
