Sofa of Silk...

silksofa.jpg

Dad and I have been really busy with wholesale orders recently, we have had 8 new orders in the last 10 days alone. I picked up all this silk from dad at the weekend, over 300 skeins of it. The rest that he had dyed wasn't yet dry. Doesn't it look lovely there on the sofa in the shop? Now Ijust need to get it all labelled and packed..

Seven slash seven

When I worked at the "proper job" I kept this blog very quiet. Not because I ever talked about work work here (god forbid) but more because I didn't really want the people that I worked with to know about HipKnits / MagKnits and all the other bits that I got up to out of work. A couple of people there knew about it all but not many. That was the way I liked it. I think that the couple of people still read here now but don't comment to my knowledge.

I guess now that I don't work there any more it doesn't matter if they all find this blog and know all about my crazy knitting business running / magazine publishing / book writing adventures. Does it? I'm still not sure that I want too many people that know me in real life to know me here as well, its a balance that I've always been very careful about. I know that any one of them could google my name and end up here but that's not the same as tellig them about it, is it?

People that read here regularly (and some of you have been doing since March 2003 - eek, that makes me feel old!) may feel like you know everything about me but there is so much more than the stuff that I share here. At the same time lots of people who know me in real life don't know about half the things that I post about on here.

Anyway, enough blather. Can you tell that I'm procrastinating about updating the shop today? Half of the new yarns are shown here, the others are coming later and WILL be on the site today at some point. Newsletter subscribers will hear about it as soon as they are there. I promise.

So, now lets cross the line between online and real life and see if Bob finds his way over here. One of my ex work work colleagues (how's that for a title?) has started this blog and this flickr group in support of the victims of the 7/7 attacks in London. Go, click the links, join the flickr group and in Bob's own words, "do exactly what it says on the tin" Its one of the best causes I can think of, the 7/7 attacks were the closest I have ever been (both emotionally and physically) to such tragedy and its not something that will ever leave me.

New designs and yarns

I know that I should have updated the Hipknits website yesterday but Trinity and I bunked the day off and spent most of our free time in Borders drinking hot chocolate and gossiping with Anna. It was lovely but today is firmly back to work again with 92 parcels laying on the floor in my hall ready to be posted and lots of photos to edit and upload. Lets plan for the shop to be stocked and ready to go tomorrow morning, shall we?

Sue posted me the Seraphim shawl that she knitted as well as a new silk tank that I designed, these took nearly a week to arrive despite being posted first class which has had the 2 of us panicking on email every day. It was well worth it though, the samples are just beautiful. I must finish writing the different sizes for this one and then get it up on the website, maybe for tomorrow but if not for next week.

greentop.jpg

The silk tank fits me! Don't look too closely at the photo taken in the mirror in the kids toyroom as that is where the best light is to be found in this house. It makes me realise how much weight I still have to lose, I do have a plan but I'm not going to share it with you just yet. I will get better pictures for the pattern, I promise!

UFOs

Going through my gigantic pile of half finished knits recently I found these 3.

UFOhiptee.jpg

Half a Hip tee, knitted in Aran silk. This one is over half done, why didn't I finish it?

UFOshawl.jpg

Most of a shawl knitted in Socks that Rock. The main piece is done, I just need to sort out the edging and block it.

ufocashcardi.jpg

A complete cardigan in aran cashmere. This is totally finished apart from a blocking and finishing of the neckband.

Which one should I finish first? Or should I just start something new?

More randomness from me

More randomness from me today, sorry. Lets hope for something proper tomorrow.

1 - I'm destashing, lots of lovely quality sock yarn here on ebay. Sweet Georgia, Koigu or socks that rock anyone?

2 - Much as it pains me to link here, I love this carbon footprint calulator. We came out as way below the UK average with a result of 5.something.

3 - I'm loving our organic fruit and veg boxes that we're getting delivered thanks to a post on Julie's blog.

4 - I've spent the weekend putting the finishing touches to the book edits and thinking about the next one, I have 2 ideas floating around in my head at the moment that I need to work out. Its pretty exciting!

5 - Wondering how Royal Mail can get away with putting up their prices AGAIN when their service is so rubbish. We posted 2 birthday cards the other week at the same time in the same post box, one arrived the next day and the other took a week. At the same time a customer of mine just received an order that I posted first class early in Feb. Interesting huh?

6 - ADDED LATER, go and look at our yarns on One Planet Yarn and Fiber , didn't Lis do a good job of adding them all? I'm trying not to look at the other yarns they have there, MUST NOT BUY MORE YARN.

Random Friday

1 - Magknits. I am about to send an email out to the notify list, the next issue will be 1st May. I was late sending the patterns over to Alexandra to tech edit and seeing as the advertisers were the same for both March and April I decided to miss out on April rather than give the patterns only a short exposure by getting the issue out late.

2 - Wonderwool Wales. I found out this morning that HipKnits has a last minute space at the show! Wayne, Trinity and I will be there - I'm so excited to see Dee and Jeni again..

3 - I love Sue! See the lovely samples she has knitted for me? I'm a lucky lucky person, oh yes I am.

4 - The magazines will be out in the post tomorrow, nearly all packed up. It passed the Wayne seal of approval, he declared it better than the first one so obviously I was just over-reacting again with being so unhappy with it.

5 - I have over 900 skeins of yarn in the shop that need labelling. Gulp. Just waiting for my new printer ink to arrive so that I can print off the labels.

Finally

The day that I sometimes thought would never arrive is here. Issue 2 of Yarn Forward Magazine arrived safe and sound yesterday, after a whole day of waiting it beat their deadline and arrived 2 minutes inside the delivery window they had given me.

I have mixed feelings. I'm SO HAPPY that it is finally here yet disappointed at how badly I was let down by the design team (again, some of the pictures seem slightly stretched, a lot of the images are blurry and it has fewer pages than issue 1 due to the designers not understanding that I wanted BIG pictures of the patterns). In short, it is not perfect. I'm trying to remember that the main thing is that it is here and that I get to spend the imminent future stuffing over 2,000 copies in envelopes for subscribers. (subscribers copies will be out by the weekend followed by shop copies on Monday before being available to buy single issues after that on Tuesday)

I love all the subscribers who stuck by me and waited for this issue. (That's not to say I don't love those who asked for their money back, of whom there ended up being less than 10 in the end, not bad odds really.) The magazine is now going to be completely on track with beautiful gorgeous issues published every 3 months without fail thanks to the lovely knitters over at Pentacor* who are going to be doing the design and printing from now on. They stepped in to rescue the printing of this issue and although I know they would have loved to do the design work as well that was an extra expense I couldn't afford.

Issue 3 will be out mid July, Issue 4 in mid October and then we are back on track for a January 2008 issue. Phew. Maybe I won't throw in the towel just yet... Must go, I have envelopes to stuff!

* See how happy I am to have found them (or been found by them, as it were)? I'm naming them right off without any fear of it all going horribly wrong, that's how much I trust them.

Honey, I cloned the kids

Everyone who sees Trinity comments on how much she looks like Brooke and Cameron. The first photos taken of each of them are all so similar and they really do look alike, the three of them. Its a shame that all of the photos of Brooke that we have are pre digital camera ones so the quality of them just isn't as good. I can't get our scanner to work so I took a picture of one of Brooke's early photos instead.

Here we have Cameron and Trinity doing their we are totally brother and sister act :

And here we have Brooke and Trinity, these 2 look even more alike when you see Trinity wearing Brooke's old dresses!

Quilts for kids

brookequiltdone.jpg

Brooke - Cath Kidston back and Amy Butler pieced front. Single bed sized. Sorry about the dark photo.

camquiltback.jpg

Cameron - Cath Kidston pieced front and back. (football and showjumping on the front and circus elephants on the back) Slightly smaller than single bed sized.

trinityquiltback.jpg

Trinity - Heather Ross front and back. Cot sized.

My first ever 3 quilts, the kids all seem to love them - well, Brooke and Cameron love theirs and Trinity wasn't been that sick on hers which I'm taking as a good sign. Who could ask for more? I really enjoyed making these and my sewing machine has hardly stopped the last few weeks, I really must take more photos of all the finished sewn bits to share with you..

Two things

anuta_cardi.jpg

Number 1 - thank you to Anita for the gorgeous cardigan. I love it and from the look on Trinity's face she loves it too.

Number 2 - tell me that this isn't a smile? I know she is not quite 4 weeks but she really smiles sometimes, I can't bear to think its just wind - especially when most of her smiles are for her dad when he he comes in from work and showers her with kisses.

New yarns, new yarns

I've been busy dyeing lots of yarn over the last few days, the weather here has been amazing - both warm and breezy at the same time which makes for perfect dryin conditions. There is nothing nicer than dyeing a few kilos of yarn in the morning, hanging it out at lunchtime and being able to bring it in 3 hours later totally dry. It makes me remember how much I love the summer and how much less productive we are over the winter months.

For MONTHS now I've been searching for a mill that would custom spin me some yarn and I think I've finally found them. I have a few kilos as a sample and I've fallen in love, the sheen and the softness are just amazing.

coast.jpg

See? The yarn just shimmers with colour doesn't it? I have a few different samples here ranging from 100% seacell to a 50/50 seacell silk blend in a laceweight, there are also a couple of cobweb weights as well. I think I know which one I prefer but I'm still swatching and trying to decide for sure..

As well as some of the new yarns there is also lots of cashmere today, lace weight and sock weight, as well as a 20% discount on all Schaeffer yarns. We've been busy!

Spending

I've been on a bit of a spending kick recently with three skeins of Emily sock yarn from Posh Dee last week and Hello Yarn's fibre club this week.

Good job I've also been dyeing lots of yarn for a big HipKnits update tomorrow morning isn't it? Expect to see new yarns and colours there at about 9am GMT. Plus a lovely big sale page and some brand new yarns.

Serious studio envy

Heather Bailey

Alicia Paulson

Amy Butler
(and have you seen her new shop and fabric collection?)

I'm in spring cleaning the shop mode, Trinity and I will be working hard on that this week and more so once the kids have gone back to school. I'd love to end up with a space to work in that looks something like these ones above but I'm realistic enough to know that won't happen any time soon!

Tears and stuff

Its been a funny week this week, lots of tears from all of us for lots of different reasons. Trinity has a good pair of lungs on her, she is louder than either Brooke or Cameron were as babies. Thats not to say that she cries all the time, only that when she does the whole house knows about it! I think it could be third child syndrome, she knows that in order to be heard over the cacophony* in the house she is going to have to shout, so shout is what she does. Love her.

Cameron has had a week of two year old toddler temper tantrums that frequently end with both him and me in tears. Nothing unusual for a 2 year old boy with a brand new baby sister but still trying when patience is wearing thin for other reasons.

Me? I seem to have cried a fair bit, for both good and reasons. As well as the normal overwhelming baby hormones and settling into being a family of 5 there are moments when I just look at the children and feel like I am going to explode with love for them, tears are quick to come when I see how precious they are and realise just how lucky Wayne and I are to have them. Just to realise how tiny they actually are and how much they rely on us 100% to look after them and show them the right way. Its an overwhelming responsibility, dont you think?

Also this week, Brooke and I have spent a fair bit of time hugging and sharing tears of grief for my grandma who died on Monday, which was the day before we had planned to take her newest great grand-daughter to visit her. This is the first time that Brooke has come into contact with someone she knows dying and I think she is getting through it really well. We have had lots of open conversations about what happens when you die and Wayne and I have let her ask questions, talk about it or just feel sad when she wants to. She doesnt mention it for a couple of days and then I will find a little picture or note written to her great grandma or she will suddenly bring it up over dinner or ask more questions. I hadnt realised the difference between knowledge and understanding before now. Brooke knew what it meant to die but she didnt really understand, and Im not sure that she does now. Really, do any of us? We are all doing OK though, I think.

Totally unconnected with tears, the new banner - did you notice? I decided that I didnt want to look at a picture of the old family of four up there any more and I discovered the fun of Photoshop Brush Tools through a link from somewhere so had a little play and came up with this.

* I learned that word from Emma. Love it!
