shop goodies
i just sent this out to the hipknits newsletter group :
Thanks to those of you who came along on Monday to help us clear out some of our older stock. I was left with around 200 skeins of yarn to offer in the sale on the website and I'm afraid that my laziness is your gain.
I dont have time to take photos of each colour of yarn and upload them and write a shop entry for each one. So I decided to put them on sale as lucky dip items.
4 are on the site now with some aran silk to come tomorrow.
You can see them all here
we have sock cashmere, lace cashmere, schaeffer anne, schaeffer chunky yarns all for £5 as well as mixed sale packs for £12.
If you have a particular colour preference do let me know and I will do what I can.
Next week is a HUGE dyeing week so if you have any custom orders get them in now. I found over 200 kilos of undyed stock in the move that I had kind of forgottten about so you can expect lots and lots of goodies on the site next week.
I will also send out a newsletter discount code for 10% off to be used on next weeks update day.
Have fun
xx

Project Organise
Ugh. Just look at the state of my workspace? How am I ever going to get this lot organised, especially as it is half term this week? I think that the answer is to forget about it this week and take next week off work and concentrate on just getting the place straight. I have a couple of visits planned for next week anyway, one to Michaela and one to Carolyn and after the stress of last week and this one I think that I deserve a week off, don't you?
This is the current view from the front door looking across to the kitchen and toilet in the back right hand corner (note my helper in the back) :
Then this is the view from the corner over near the kitchen towards the front wall (note kiddy corner with the sofas, TV, DVD player and toy box) :
You may have noticed that the windows are very small. That's because the new home of HipKnits used to be a pig sty. Brooke was looking at the walls and saw a nail next to one of the pictures and asked if I thought that was where the pigs had their family portrait on the wall! I think she may be right.

Moves and Changes
This weekend has been one of moves and changes. 2 major moves have taken place, one has been moving HipKnits from its old home in Sawbridgeworth to its new home just outside of Great Dunmow. The new "shop" is not a shop as such but is more a workarea / studio type place. Approx twice the size of the old shop it has its own kitchen and toilet and is lovely. Brooke tells me that I can't call it a workshop because that is to Bobish but that's really what it is. It is not going to be open as a shop at all but I'm sure there will be the odd open day there and as long as you let me know in advance it should be OK to come around.
I had no idea how much stuff I'd accumulated in the 15 months of being at Sawbridgeworth. Tonnes and tonnes of it. It is all currently piled up in the middle of the floor in the new place just waiting for me to have time to sort it out. Sigh. That should keep me busy for a while.
The open day yesterday was great, it was lovely to see so many old friends and also new customers. They cleared out a LOT of the stock but there is still a lot left so expect a BIG shop update tomorrow with lots and lots of sale stock. I also realised that I have to curb my spending on new products (she says, having just placed an order for another 500 kilos of yarn from one of my suppliers. Eek) until I have dyed up all the stock I have. That's probably around 100 kilos. Must get busy over the next few weeks I think.
The other move was smaller, less physically demanding but emotionally devastating. If I tell you that we moved from this :
to this on Friday night :
You'd understand wouldn't you? I hadn't realised how desperate I was to keep her a baby until Wayne put the big cot up last week. She has been too big for the crib for a while now but looks so so small in the big cot. Brooke and Cam both moved to the big cot in their own room at 6 weeks, Trinity lasted in our room until 10 weeks and I really miss her now she is sleeping on her own. Friday night she went to sleep straight away in her new bed while I wept a few tears in the other room. She has always slept well since she was a couple of days old but last night she went down at just after 9 and woke up at 5 for some milk and a cuddle and then went straight back to sleep. Its now 9am and she still hasn't woken up. Good job its half term isn't it? When I say she woke up at 5 for a feed I don't think she was really awake. We have this great night time routine where I manage to scoop her out of bed as she is just beginning to wake up and suck her fists. Then I feed her while she is still half asleep and she doesn't really wake up properly at all. It works perfectly, even when she is sleeping in her own room. Sniff, my small girl is growing up. :(

Child of the dark side
Like my fellow hand dyeing twin, I've never been able to get the hang of crochet. I can do straight lines, chains and single crochet are OK but that's about it. I long to make a ripple blanket but can't see me ever being able to work out what to do.
The other night I was sitting with the big ball of handspun yarn that I made last week from the Hello Yarn fibre club fibre in one hand and a 10mm crochet hook in the other hand. Brooke came up and asked what I was doing and I showed her how to make a chain. Now bear in mind that this is the girl who regularly asks to learn to knit and then gets bored after about 5 minutes.
She promptly sat there with the hook and yarn and started making a chain. 2 days later she is crocheting at every opportunity (even asked if she could take it in the car on the way to school, that 3 minute journey!) and has a chain of handspun yarn that it about 10 metres long! What on earth we are going to do with it I don't know. She said something about sewing it into a place mat... Although part of me longs to stop her, I think I'm just going to let her carry on.
Part of me wishses she wasn't using my beautiful handspun yarn but then that is just selfish of me. Why shouldn't she want to work with lovely unique yarn? I should be more worried if she asked for squeaky acrilyc! So it looks like at least one person in the family is going to get the hang of crocheting...

ARGH
Houston, we have a problem. We have not received any emails at any of the HipKnits adresses since Michaela emailed me at 4.30 today, do you think she broke me? I've logged a call with the ever lovely Supanames but who knows what they will come back with. If in doubt use the MagKnits address until further notice. :(

Stuff
Ugh, lots of things going on here at the moment. I almost have too much to talk about to be able to think of anything to write. Does that make sense?
The HipKnits shop was updated yesterday and I'm all set for our 50% off moving sale on Monday. We'll be open from 11 - 2 so if you're in the area pop in for some lovely 50% off bargains.
If anyone is looking for a yarn bargain, Andy has lots of Surplus stock of Rooster Almerino yarn for sale. You can see the colours of the aran and dk weight here. I believe he is selling them in packs of 10 * 25g balls for £9 (plus postage) instead of the recommended £23.75. Bargain. I bought a load from him a while ago and it is lovely yarn. If you email him he will tell you what colours he has left and send you a paypal invoice.

One of THOSE days
This is how Trinity, Cameron and I all feel today. We had big plans but now we are just going to stay at home and be miserable and sick together. Bah Humbug.
PS - no babies were harmed in the taking of this photo. She was all cheerful until i took the camera out and then just as I went to snap this she screamed.

Seven Random Facts
Dee tagged me for the seven random facts meme that is going around. I think I'll play but I won't tag anyone in return.. The first 2 are stolen from Dee, have I ever told you that we are separated at birth twins?
- I've never smoked. Never even tried it.
- I absolutely hate talking on the phone, and will do pretty much anything to avoid it.
- I have had lots of jobs since I left school, the most interesting one was driving horse drawn wedding carriages and the least interesting one was opening mail for Hertfordshire Social Services.
- I hate hoovering and haven't done any for years. Good job Wayne doesn't mind having that as one of his jobs isn't it?
- I love my sleep. When Wayne and I first lived together he would spend Sunday mornings all by himself as I slept until lunchtime. Lack of sleep is the hardest thing about having children even though our 3 do sleep well. I could quite easily go to bed before 8pm and wake up at 8am the next morning every night if I had the chance.
- I learned to horse ride when I was about 7 years old and got my frst horse when I was 10. I used to ride competitively until I was about 18 but every single horse I had ensured that I spent more time on the floor than on the horses back. I used to fall off all the time and ended up being taken to hospital a few times with concusions, bruises and bumps. The last horse I had, Korky, still lives with mum and dad in lovely retired happiness in the field.
- My first ever smear test came back abnormal which was the start of about 5 years of tests and treatment which ended up with me being told I was unlikey to be able to have children. Hmmmm, think they got that one wrong don't you? I still have smear tests every 6 months and have done for the last 13 years. They have now changed the age that they start taking smear tests from 18 to 21. That scares me at lot.

WonderWool Wales
Ugh, we're home. I'm exhausted. It is gone lunchtime on Monday and as Wayne dropped off the big kids at school an nursery today Trinity and I are still in our jammies with no plans to get dressed until we have to turn out to the post office this afternoon.
The drive to Wales took about 4.5 hours. That's a lot of driving. Especially when the show finished at 6pm on Sunday evening, we made it home at about midnight last night. Trinity was an angel the whole weekend, she didn't cry once - just slept and laughed and enjoyed being cuddled by lots of different stand holders and customers. She was perfect and made it really easy for Wayne and I.
So, I met lots of lovely people at the show. Other standholders first - I knew that Jeni was going to be there and I hadn't met Andy before although I buy lots of goodies from him. I also met Eirwen again which was lovely and Stacey for the first time. Stacey has very kindly agreed to take some Yarn Forward magazines to Woolfest to sell for me as I'm not going to be there. How lovely is she??
We met lots of lovely customers as well, Yvonne, Sue, Charlotte, Emily were just a few. I'm sure I'll remember others as they week goes on. It was also funny to meet one person who has been known to publicly state what a terrible person I am - they didn't buy anything but I was very polite and friendly to them as they browsed the stall. I guess they didn't realise that I had read what they had written. The internet isn't as big a place as you would think!
Oh, and for the first time ever at a show I had to chase after a little old lady who had "forgotten" to pay for stuff from our stand. Funny how she had managed to get around the corner and put it in her handbag without realising it isn't it? I was FURIOUS and ran after her when Wayne pointed out what she had done and when I caught up with her I just said all politely "Excuse me, I think you forgot to pay for that" and took the money off her. How rude!
So. I have lots of yarns left over that will be on the website this Wednesday. I'm also busy getting ready for the big moving shop sale next Monday, now that is going to be a good one! For now, i'm watching Dr Phil and catching up on emails...

goodies
I've been shopping a little bit this month, 75% of my monthly yarn and fabric budget went in the first 2 days of May with this little purchase as well as one other fabric one that I'll show you next week.

3 skeins of yarn pirate yarn from One Planet Yarn and Fibre. Love the colours, I'm thinking of using the Mermaid and One Planet skeins (left and right) together in a shawl and maybe making a scarf / shawl out of the Malamute (middle) skein. With about 480 yards in each skein there should be more than enough for that.. The yarn is a lot finer than most of the fingering weight yarns I'm used to so I dont think I'd use it for socks.
Today is all about packing for Wonderwool, we're on our way in the morning after the school run. If you're going to be there make sure youstop by and say hello.

Just a little sock yarn
The HipKnits shop update today is all about sock yarn! I have 3 new types of sock yarn that will be on the site this evening,

- 100% merino handspun sock yarn. This is THE softest yarn ever, I love it!

- BFL and Alpaca sock yarn. Buttery soft and smoth this is a gorgeous blend of yarns.

- 100% BFL. Bouncy and soft this will make beautiful socks.
I have dyed HUNDREDS of skeins but most are coming to Wonderwool with us at the weekend. I am just going to put one of each colour on the site today and then anything left over from the show will be there next week. You can see all the yarns that are going to be on the site today here.

Hello Yarn
I joined the Hello Yarn Fibre club a while back and my first box of goodies arrived on Monday. Look at the lovely BFL fibre
Which I pre drafted into lovely little twists
and then spun on the drop spindle (badly, see how it is thick and thin? I'm out of practise)
I have one skein that is around 60 metres and 40g.
This should give me just over 200 metres in total when I finish spinning the rest of the yarn. Lovely. It will knit up at about 13 stitches per 10cm, what to make?
Adrian was also lovely enough to include a little gift for Trinity with the package, have you ever seen such a lovely bonnet?
She got to wear it yesterday morning as soon as the parcel arrived and looked so cute in her car seat with the bonnet from Adrian, the cardigan from Emma and the blanket from Michaela. What a lucky baby and what a lucky person I am to have such lovely friends.

Book Review - the secret of Crickley Hall
Saturday morning I lay in bed feeding Trinity and started to read The Secret of Crickley Hall by James Herbert. I spent the rest of Saturday morning walking around the house baking cheesecakes and preparing chicken enchiladas for dinner with some friends that afternoon with the book in front of my face.
As soon as the kids were in bed Saturday night and Wayne had gone out, I sat on the sofa feeding trinity and reading the book. I kept reading for 4 hours until I was so scared that I had to go to sleep with the lights on. Sunday morning, I picked up the book again and finished it in the car on the way to IKEA. 600 pages in just over 24 hours. Not a bad weekends work.
I loved the book, even though I did have to sleep with the lights on after a huge reading session. It is a fairly typical haunted house story but with another story going on at the same time about why the family who are living in the house stay there. Really enjoyable and one that I'm sure I'll read again some time only with slightly less intensity!

hats, hats and oh yes - more hats!
About yesterday's post... The reason that comments were turned off most of the day is that I wrote the post a couple of weeks ago but then decided not to publish it. When I was closing comments on old posts to avoid spam it sneaked into the pile and then when I published it yesterday I forgot to open comments on it. Thanks for all your emails and comments, on the most part I am proud of what I do - I could do without the grumpy people at the moment though.
On to a more cheerful topic for today, it seems that I'm not the only person to have bought this book and become obesssed with the sun hat pattern? I've seen lots of others on my blog reading the past couple of days and it appears that no-one seems to be able to make the pattern fit straight away.
The first one I made was for me, but it fits Brooke PERFECTLY. Amy Butler fabric from my stash. I love it.

The second one I made was also from Amy Butler stash fabric and I shortened the brim and made the crown about 1.5 inches wider. It fits!

Then we have one for Cam. My stash doesn't have much in the way of boy fabric but by cutting 2 pieces instead of cutting on the fold I managed to make the hat out of just 1 fat quarter of fabric. Again, this is the size in the book (big headed family we are) and it fits Cam beautifully. Wayne seems to think its too girly for him so I may have to make him another one..

I made a few changes to all of the hats. Firstly I didn't use interfacing for the brim because I didn't have any. I also didn't top stitch the brim. I only lined the brim, not the whole hat and I shortened the brim on all 3 and made the crown and top bigger on mine. After all that I'm going to tell you that I love the pattern, the instructions were easy to follow and I can see many many more of these in my future.

I couldn't quite work out how to size it down for Trinity's head though. Instead I decided to make her a different kind of sun hat and after lots of playing around with shapes came up with this one. I loved it so much that I made some more. Lots more. Anyone need a 0-6 month hat sun hat, we have a couple going spare...

In the interests of full disclosure, I did make a 4th hat from the Lottaa Jansdotta book - made from denim but it came out so HUGE that no-one would try it on for me...

A day in the life
Children change so much and I know that in a few months time my daily routine will have changed so much that I just wanted to record this here partly for my own benefit and partly for all the people who ask me how I manage to fit so much into my days. This is my routine on the days that both the big kids are at school / nursery. Cam is only in nursery part time and the days that he is at home with Trinity and I run a little different. Imagine the below with the added fun of a 2 year old thrown into the mix and you'll realise why those days are the days that I long for a glass of gin and tonic when the kids are in bed!
Please note - this is NOT an excuse for the miserable people out there who seem to read my blog with the sole purpose of being irritated by it to email me and explain in great detail how I'm a bad mum / bad business owner / generally bad person for doing everything that I do. Yes, yes, yes. I know all of that, you tell me often enough. I'm a bad mother, bad person, bad friend - blah blah blah. Its a good job I don't listen to you isn't it? Now please don't email me, I don't even read them any more.
Anyway, back to the routine.. If I had my way I would get to sleep in until at least 8am every day. Unforuntately in the real world that doesn't happen and most days I'm out of bed around 7am. if not earlier. Wayne is great at getting up early with Cam who is the first to wake up in the house every day (sometimes 2 hours before I drag myself out of bed!) , Brooke and I are usually a little later and Trinity is the lazy bones in the house.
The big kids and I have breakfast and then I get the three of us dressed, washed and ready for the day. I like to have this done by 7.30 / 8.00 ish if I can. Then they get to run around and play with their toys, read books or do whatever they want (not including watching TV) until it is time for school.
By 8am Trinity gets woken up, dressed and fed so that we can all be out of the house by 8.45. Brooke and Cameron are dropped off at school and nursery and Trinity and I head over to the shop, getting there just in time to listen to Flirty at 9.30 on the radio, this is a very important part of our daily routine! She has a bouncy chair and a million toys in the shop and is quite happy to hang out with me while I try to get stuff done. Typically she sleeps for the first hour or so that we are there anyway.
First on the agenda is the day's post. The sorting office is only 100 yards from the shop but shuts at 12 so getting everythig packed and over to them is first priority. On a typical day there will be anything from 20 - 50 packages to send out so the post can take most of the morning, especially when you take into account the frequent feeding / nappy changing sessions! Printing labels, picking the orders from the shelf, wrapping in tissue paper etc is a lot more time consuming than I used to give credit for..
Once the post is ready we take a walk to the sorting office, often stopping in at the cafe on the way back for a pint of milk / cup of tea / gossip etc before we're back in the shop and back to work.
Dyeing yarn, skeining and labelling, winding cones into skeins, stock takes, photographing, updating the website, booking couriers, putting together wholesale packs and orders, answering email and phone queries - the list is endless. I find enough to keep me busy until lunchtime when we head for home. I could easily find enough to keep me busy all day but I tend to pack things up to take home instead of spending all day every day at the shop.
Back home and while I'm getting lunch ready (tends to be something on toast or soup) I prepare or cook dinner for that evening. If we're having something like lasagne, chilli etc I can get it all cooked and put to one side. Pie and potatoes can be prepared and left ready to cook in the evening, basically I do what I can to make sure that by the time we are all home from school and work there is not much left for me to do in the kitchen. The period between 5 and 7 is the most stressful one for me so if I dont have to cook during that time my life is MUCH easier.
Afer lunch I will sometimes go to bed with Trinity for an hour or so if her naps are working out right for that, or sit down and answer emails / update the website for a bit. There is usually an hour and a half or so until its time to pack up and go and get the big kids.
We're usually all home by about 4pm at which point it is snack time (jam on toast usually) around the kitchen table where we share stories about our days and decide what to do next. Dinner is at 6, which means that whatever I cooked / prepared that morning needs to be ready by then. The couple of hours between getting home and eating dinner are usually spent in the kids play room or outside in the summer with me on the laptop taking full advantage of the wireless internet connection we have, the big kids playing with toys and Trinity just hanging out, being loved and fussed over by all of us.
We all sit down at the table to eat at 6. If Wayne is home from work he joins us and usually Trinity decides that she is hungry too as soon as I start eating so most mealtimes are spent trying not to spill food on her as she drinks her milk as I eat. From 5 ish through until when she falls asleep in the evening is her high maintenance time when she is most unsettled and needs lots of cuddles and feeds.
After dinner is homework / reading time for Brooke followed by a little bit of TV time. The plan is that big kids will be in bed by half seven / eight ish. Then its TV time for the 3 of us until around 10pm or whenever Trinity falls asleep for the night. This is the time that I would have used to been knitting while watching TV but these days I'm more likely to be on the laptop working. There are always a million emails to answer, people to contact, invoices to prepare, paypal admin to deal with, patterns to write and a trillion other things that keep me typing away while chatting and watching TV. Its a good job I can multi task isn't it? I always knew that mu 120 words per minute typing skills would be good for something.

HipKnits news
I know that it is Wednesday (well done Kerrie!) which usually means a HipKnits shop update, but not today. I'm frantically trying to finish off 2 big wholesale orders as well as label and pack for Wonderwool so I haven't had time to prepare a shop update for today. There will be one next Wednesday though with oodles of new sock yarns. In the meantime here are a few BIG pieces of HipKnits news.
- I'm starting a HipKnits aran silk Clapotis gallery seeing as I know so many people have made them. If you have knit a Clapotis out of our aran silk please send me an email with a picture or a link to where the picture s=is in Flickr or your blog so that I can add you to the gallery. At the end of June I'll be picking one of the emails out at random and sending that lucky person enough aran silk in whatever colour they like to make another Clapotis, or something else. I can't wait to see how all the different colourways look when knitted up into Claps!
- HipKnits are moving house! More details nearer the time but for now put Monday 28th May in your diaries as we will be having a big open day in the shop with most of our stock at half price. Saves me packing it up and moving it, doesn't it?

Sockapaloooza
I'm so excited about my sock pal, I've been reading her blog and generally stalking her a lot. She mentioned that she would like lace socks which gives me the opportunity to make these from MagKnits using some dk cashmere and silk blend that I dyed over the weekend.
I've never knit lace socks before so the one you see here is version 3. 1 and 2 were both ripped out and now that I look closely at this picture I can see another mistake, but I think I'll let it go. The pattern is nice and easy to remember and as soon as I sew down that picot row at the top I think they will look very pretty indeed. I hope my sock pal likes them..

Cashmere cardigan

Well, the blue cashmere cardigan is moving towards being finished. It had a quick block and was pieced together last week, I haven't sewn in the ends yet as yoy can see and it needs a press after being carried back and forwards from home and shop for a while but I like the way its coming together.
I'm planning to finish it using the little piece of Amy Butler fabric that you can see at the top of the picture. I have some big ideas for fabric and knitting / crochet patterns in together, using fabric from Sew Hip and yarn from HipKnits. This is the first piece and I have lots more cut out and ready to be sewn / knit together. I might try and get some done this long weekend..
A couple of questions to answer, the sling fabric was from Dunelm. They dont seem to sell fabric online but if there is one near you in the UK you should go. I love their fabric section. Oh, and the haircut was done by my sister's friend who is a hairdresser at mum and dad's house while Trinity, Brooke and Cam played in the garden. That's the ONLY way to get a haircut with a tiny baby around!

HipKnits shop update
I've been having fun dyeing lots of spinning fibre recently, these ones here are all 100% merino and are in the shop now. Next week I hope to have some alpaca tops and some BFL fibre ready to go as well. There are also lots of other lovely yarns that you can see here in the flickr set and here in the shop. Newsletter subscribers received their special 10% discount code for today's update, we do this once a month so if you want to get the discount next month then sign up for the newsletter!
We have lots of aran silk 400g packs on the site today, these are some big 200g skeins that we want to get rid of as we're only buying the 100g skeins from our supplier now. They are at a special price of £25 per pack - that's a saving of £7 on 400g of regular priced aran silk. There are not many packs in each colour so you need to be quick. 400g is enough to make the new V neck tank that is on the site or a Clapotis or other large shawl.
Oh, and Erssie designed this lovely baby hat from our silk and then was kind enough to let us have the pattern. Free with any purchase of aran weight silk, isn't it lovely?

Sling thing
If you ever pop into the shop in the week you are likely to see Trinity and I looking something like this (apart from the fact that this pic was taken in my lounge, not the shop) She settles so nicely in the sling and it means that I can walk around and do more than I can when I am holding her. Pack orders, twist hanks into skeins, open post, eat lunch etc. Its revolutionary, I love my sling.
I made it following these insructions which made absolutely NO SENSE to me until I started to just follow them and then they were perfect. As soon as I stopped trying to understand the whole process it seemed to all come together. I used this cotton fabric that I bought recently and I have lots left. Maybe a skirt to match my sling? Or would that be a little too sad? I also learned to sew a french seam while I was making this which I was really excitd about, how cool am I? Not very but I don't care..
Oh and yes, and I had my haircut, did ya notice? Remember how long it was before? Well it is about 9 inches shorter now and I love it, it is so flippy!

See this?

This is how I feel at the moment. Like I could just lay down, put my hands above my head and say OK, I've had enough. By lunchtime today expect to see BOTH of us laying on the lounge floor like this, its been a busy few days.
Did I ever tell you that I designed an invisibility cloak for Alison's new Harry Potter book? The lovely Colleen knitted it for me as I was due to start knitting it in Cornwall last year just as i scalded my arm so badly. You can see a pic of it on the last page of the Knitpicks preview page.
Talking of Alison, I'm in for Sockapalooza 4. 1000 people knitting socks for each other, how cool is that? I have my sock pal information and I'm off to the shop this morning to choose some yarn and get started.
Oh and go and check out the May MagKnits - I LOVE the felted bag and the hat pattern best I think..
