Wigwam tank

This tank is knit in one piece and I chose to leave one side and shoulder seam open so that it is easier to get the baby in and out of the tank. This also means that you only have to seam one shoulder!! You can choose to seam them as normal, this means you then have to put the tank on over the babies head.

Materials - 5mm needles. Approx 80g of Colinette wigwam yarn or other ribbon yarn that knits to the same tension. 1 press fastening if you are choosing to leave the shoulder seam undone.

In the tank shown above, I chose to use oddments of 3 different colours of wigwam and alternated them in random stripe patterns.

Gauge - 22 rows and 16 stitches to 10cm measured over stocking stitch using 5mm needles.

Size - This tank will fit a newborn / 3 month old baby. Simply add stitches and rows to increase the size.

Directions.

Cast on 76 stitches and ending with a wrong side row work in stocking stitch for 14 cm before shaping for the armholes.

Cast off 3 stitches, work 32 stitches, cast off 6 stitches, work to end.

Next row - cast off 3 stitches, work to end of first piece.

You have now split for the front and the back and will continue to work each piece separately. You should have 32 stitches on the needles for each piece.

Back

Continue in stocking stitch until the whole piece measures 20cm (6 cm from armhole shaping) ending with a wrong side row before shaping the neck.

Knit 11 stitches, cast off 10 stitches, Knit final 11 stitches. Purl 1 row.**

Continue shaping the neckline by decreasing 1 stitch at the neck edge of the next 3 rows. 8 stitches remaining. Work 2 rows before binding off.

Repeat for other side of the neck.

Front

Follow directions for back until you reach **

If you are going to seam both shoulders you can follow the directions exactly as for the back.

If you plan to leave the side seam and one shoulder open, you can follow the directions for shaping the neckline for the piece that will be the same side as the fold.

For the shoulder seam that will be left open, follow the directions as above knitting an extra 5 rows after shaping.

Finishing

Join shoulder seams and side seam as required. If you are leaving one shoulder open, attach press fastening in the most appropriate place and then make 4 lengths of icord that are approx 3 inches long. Attach at each side of the open piece at about 1 inch from the top and 1 inch from the bottom so that they can be tied shut.
